REMINDER- NO CLASS SCHEDULED THIS FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13.
A message from Superintendent Jerry Sardina
Dear Mountaineer Families,
As we strive for excellence in our school district, your input and feedback are invaluable to us. Over the past year, I have been working with several groups within our school community, including the school board, staff, parents, and business partners. This project includes developing and implementing a district-wide strategic plan, and we want to ensure that your voices are heard in shaping the future of our schools.
To achieve this, we are launching a Strategic Planning Survey designed to gather your thoughts, ideas, and aspirations for our school district. Your participation in this survey will provide us with crucial insights to chart a course that aligns with the needs and expectations of our community.
The survey will cover various aspects of our educational system, including curriculum, facilities, technology, extracurricular activities, and more. Your responses will help us identify priorities, set goals, and make informed decisions that will enhance the quality of education we provide to our students.
We understand the demands on your time and appreciate your commitment to your child's education. Therefore, we have ensured that the survey is straightforward and should take at most about 5 minutes to complete. Your candid feedback will play a significant role in shaping the future of our school district, so we encourage you to participate.
The survey will be open until the end of day October 31, 2023 and we kindly ask that you complete it at your earliest convenience. Your responses will remain confidential, and the aggregated data will be used solely for the purpose of strategic planning.
We are excited about the possibilities that lie ahead and are confident that, with your valuable input, we can make our school district an even better place for our students to learn and grow. Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our educational community. Together, we can create a brighter future for our children.
Sincerely,
Jerry Sardina
Superintendent

Volley for the Cure- October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Thank you to all that attended and donated at the 17th annual "Volley for the Cure" pinkout volleyball match v. the Kingsford Flivvers Tuesday night! We are proud of the awesome effort from our Mountaineer ladies!
In honor of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Volleyball players all over the country have been playing a part in helping raise awareness. Monetary donations are being collected throughout the month of October at home IM volleyball events and will be donated to the local Cancer Closet, the Marshfield Cancer Unit, and/or to the local American Cancer Association.
This year, a portion of the proceeds will be shared with a GoFundMe benefiting Michael Talerico and his family. Michael is a 2022 Mountaineer graduate and brother to Mountaineer Freshman Volleyball coach, Taylor Talerico. Michael was in a side-by-side accident on the weekend of September 24 and is now currently in intensive care at Marquette General. Please continue to keep the Talerico family in your prayers.
Donations can be made to the Talerico family here.

Aerospace Engineer IM alum visits
Mountaineer alum, Marc Koerschner stopped in Monday morning for a conversation with Mrs. Carey’s and Mr. Christiansen’s chemistry and Mrs. Yake’s algebra 2 classes!
During his visit, the Mountaineer spoke about his college, post baccalaureate, and professional experiences, including traveling to Greenland to study climate his junior year. Students had the opportunity to ask questions and learn about options available to them after their time at Iron Mountain High School. Marc stressed the importance of chemistry, biology, and mathematics in his line of study.
Marc graduated from IMHS in 2016 and from the University of Michigan in 2020 with a Bachelor of Science (BSE) in Aerospace Engineering. This spring, he graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology with his MSE Aerospace with a focus on conceptual system design, resilient systems, trajectory optimization and sizing of spacecraft. Now, Marc is working on his PhD in Aerospace at Georgia Tech. The class was interested in his working thesis on the concept of self-healing buildings!
Marc stressed the importance of taking on intimidating goals and concepts “day by day, and all the sudden you will realize, that you are also doing something super cool that you never really thought you were going to be able to do.”
Marc, you make #MountaineersEverywhere proud and we are so grateful for your visit. It was great to see you! Thank you!
Iron Mountain Fire Department teaches North Elementary students fire safety
The Fire Safety House has been helping youngsters learn about fire safety since 1994. The traveling trailer makes its way across the UP to local school districts every year.
Thank you to Sandy Lapp, Nate Furton, Tyler Skoglund, Steve Olson, and the rest of the Iron Mountain Fire Department for the awesome learning experience!
East Elementary students respect and honor the American flag
After a lesson on the importance of our flag and ways to respect the flag, sixth grade students at East Elementary School worked together to fold the American flag that once hung in the Iron Mountain High School Gymnasium with the help of Air Force retiree, Mr. Joshua Chevalier this Tuesday.
Mr. Joshua Chevalier has been shadowing teachers and educational assistants this summer and fall at Iron Mountain Public Schools through the SkillBridge program. SkillBridge is a Department of Defense program that gives service members the opportunity to work and learn in civilian career fields to prepare for the civilian workforce. Mr. Chevalier has been an integral part of working with staff and students in our Summer School program at North Elementary School and with the day to day operations at East Elementary School.
We are excited to share that the Iron Mountain High School and Central Middle School gymnasiums will be undergoing a refresh project in the upcoming weeks.
Please pardon the dust as we install new bleachers, lighting, and sound equipment in the High School gym and upgrade the record boards! In addition, both gyms will have their floors refinished and the walls will receive new paint. Please check back to our website, www.imschools.org, for more information on this upcoming gymnasium refresh project.
Iron Mountain Public Schools thanks Iron Mountain-Kingsford Community Schools for their contribution to the project and for partnering to provide functional and updated spaces for student-athletes and local members of the community in the two gymnasium locations.
