Superintendent Corner
Dear Lester Prairie School District families,
School safety is a top priority at Lester Prairie Schools. We know kids learn best in an environment where they feel safe and we know that you, as parents, deserve that peace of mind.
One of the keys to school safety is being prepared. That’s why we practice emergency drills. State law requires that we do a minimum of five fire drills, five lock down drills, one tornado drill, and one bus safety drill each year. Even though we don’t like to think about a real emergency event happening in our schools, we know that we must be prepared to react safely if one should occur.
Yesterday, our local law enforcement requested that we secure the campus with students in the building. The request was precautionary and there was no immediate threat to students or staff. In total, the secure procedure lasted nine minutes. The practice safety drills that we have done showed that staff and students knew what to do to stay calm and to stay safe. We are proud of the way our students, staff, and learning community handled this event.
As soon as we were able, we communicated the situation to you, our families. We appreciate our partnership with local law enforcement and the work they do to keep our community safe every day. We appreciate our partnership with our families as we work together to maintain a safe learning environment for students in our school district.
Some helpful points during an emergency event:
- Refrain from contacting the school office, staff, and students because they will be very busy executing safety protocols.
- Do not come to the school campus.
- Avoid social media posts. Accurate information will be disseminated through School Messenger as soon as possible.
- Make sure that your contact information is updated with us.
Please do not hesitate to contact us about any questions or concerns. Again, we appreciate your partnership and the trust you place in us to care for your child.
Most sincerely,
Superintendent Melissa Radeke
