This Wednesday, March 8th is an Early Release day and we will dismiss at 2:20 pm on that day. You can find your child's bus schedule at http://www.fwps.org. Please call the office if this presents a hardship.

Friday, March 10th is a District Professional Development Day for staff. There is no school for scholars on Friday, March 10th. Please enjoy the long weekend with your family, school will resume on Monday, March 13th.

Family Connection Meeting will be scheduled for March 15th this month. This is an opportunity for you to hear updates about what is happening at OLV as well as ask any questions you may have. Principal Choi will send out the Zoom link on Monday and the day of the meeting. We hope to see you there!

OLV will be transitioning into a K-8 over the next three years, starting with adding 6th grade in the 2023-24 school year. Please see details about your interest in keeping your scholar at OLV for 6th grade.

• Priority is given to current OLV scholars!
• Parents need to apply on-line during the Choice window, which is open now through March 15.
• Choice applications can be found at www.fwps.org/choice
• Applications are available in multiple languages (English, Spanish, Dari, Russian, Ukrainian, Korean, Vietnamese, Somali)
• A random lottery will be held on April 19 at the ESC beginning at 5:30 p.m. Parents do NOT need to be present.
• Up to 30 applications will be randomly selected to join the 6th grade class at Olympic View. Any additional applications will be drawn in random order and waitlisted.
• Families will need to accept their Choice placement no later than May 1st
• Transportation will be provided for families that live within the Olympic View boundaries.

STEM Exploration Night will return as an in-person event on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, 6-8 pm at Federal Way High School! Mark your calendars to save the date for the sixth annual STEM event, which offers PreK-12th grade scholars fun, interactive opportunities to explore, prepare, and launch into STEM opportunities and STEM careers!

This year’s scholar-voted theme is STEM for Everyone. STEM is now integrated into almost every area of our lives. Come to STEM Exploration Night to see how your interests, hobbies, and career goals are connected to STEM!

COVID-19 infections remain active in our community. Both COVID-19 and influenza (flu) rates are currently moderate in King County. The CDC recommends a 3-step approach to minimize the spread:

1. Get a flu shot and COVID-19 vaccines and boosters. It’s not too late!
2. Stop the spread of germs by washing hands often; avoid touching eyes, nose, & mouth, clean frequently touched items; covering coughs & sneezes.
3. Stay home if you are sick. Get tested if you have COVID-19 symptoms or have been in close contact with someone who tests positive. Contact the school right away if your scholar tests positive. Get FREE at-home COVID-19 test kits at www.sayyescovidhometest.org. See the image below for common symptoms and what to look for!

*Scholars with fever over 100 degrees must stay home until they have been fever-free for a full 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medication. Scholars who have been vomiting or having diarrhea must stay home for a full 24 hours after it has as stopped.

Students in grades 3-12 are invited to nominate any Federal Way Public Schools staff member in the district they believe has positively impacted them, their school, and/or their community for the "Because of You" award! Students should fill out a nomination form on the district's website at www.fwps.org/BecauseOfYou.

If your student is going to be absent or tardy please call Olympic View’s office at 253-945-3500 before 9:20 am. Calls made before or after office hours, please leave a message with student name, teacher name, and the reason for absence.

Prearranged Absences

If you know your child(ren) will be missing school for an extended period of time, please stop by the office to fill out a Prearranged Absence Form. This will alert our attendance secretary and give your child's teacher the opportunity to make up a homework packet. These forms must be filled out and given to office staff 48 hours prior to your child's leave - this allows your child's teacher time to put packets together - packets cannot be made up same day.

STATEWIDE DEFINITION OF EXCUSED ABSENCES

Bereavement, illness, medical appointment, court, absence related to homelessness - these are all excused absences.

Have a doctor’s appointment? Please have your student bring a note from their appointment to get it excused. If your student is out for more than 3 days with an illness a doctor’s note is reccommended to excuse those absences.

TARDY/LATE TO SCHOOL UPDATE

Classes starts at 9:20 am. This means students are tardy (late to class) at 9:21 am. If you bring your child to school late please park in the lot and come in the main doors to sign your student in.

*Breakfast is available starting at 9:00 am. Do not drop your student off before 9:00 am as there is no supervision then.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE IS REQUIRED BY STATE LAW

If your child has 3 unexcused or 5 excused absences in one month the school is required to schedule an attendance conference.

After 7 unexcused absences in a month, and no later than 15 unexcused absences in a school year, the school district may file a truancy petition with the juvenile court.
