Belridge Secondary ESC News
December 2022
From the Principals Desk
The 2022 school year has come to an end and Christmas is just around the corner! The last few years have been extremely challenging at a global, national, state and school community level however, 2022 seems to have topped them all. Despite the many challenges, the students, families and staff at Belridge Secondary Education Support Centre have epitomised our “Belridge Bounce-back” euphemism and approached these challenges with determination, resilience, commitment and enthusiasm.
To each and every one of our students, Well Done on all of your achievements, successes, celebrations and most importantly on your continued perseverance during the school year! You all continued throughout the year despite changes to your class timetables, routines and obviously changes of staff due to the impact of COVID. You should all be proud of the many skills and attributes that you have demonstrated this year. To our Graduating Year 12 students, we look forward to hearing about your future successes as you turn the page on the next chapter and begin a new adventure. Whilst we will all miss you; we are confident that you will continue to learn, grow and succeed in all that you do!
To all of our families, Thank You for your continued support and commitment to working with our School. This partnership is instrumental in supporting our students and setting them up for success. The beginning of this school year heralded many changes for you all and I appreciate the patience that families demonstrated during the many telephone conversations regarding Close Contact discussions that occurred frequently in Term One along with all of the other complications that occurred during our peak of COVID! To our School Board members who so willingly give up their time and have coped with meeting changes, online meetings and socially distanced meetings…. Thank You for contributing to our school processes and plans for the future!
To all of the staff at Belridge Secondary ESC-Thank you for all that you have done in such challenging times to provide the highest quality of education in this unprecedented year! You have managed the implications of the changes that COVID brought upon us and have been innovative, understanding and flexible in accommodating the never-ending changes to requirements, programs, policies, procedures and staffing needs. The words Thank you are not adequate in describing the work that you do and your commitment to students and the school and quite simply the Education Assistants, Teachers, Administration Staff, School Psychologist and our incredible Deputy Principals who have all been truly amazing and have gone above and beyond!
At the end of each school year, we sadly say our farewells to some of our incredible staff here at Belridge Secondary ESC-we sincerely hope that you take away fond memories of Belridge, our ethos and the people within. Each one of you have left an indelible footprint in our school and we very sincerely wish you every success in your future endeavours whatever they may be! Goodbye and our very best wishes to: Mrs Shirley Curran, Mr Paul Cummins, Miss Abbie Roberts, Mr Kevin Coffey and Mrs Donna Powell-enjoy the new opportunities that 2023 brings. To Ms Keira Savin who is taking Maternity Leave for 2023-congratulations, and we all look forward to meeting your new baby in the new School year-good luck and enjoy every moment!
To Ms Wendy Hughes, our Senior Secondary Deputy Principal, who is taking some very well-earned Long Service Leave in Term One and embarking on some adventures around our State before considering potential tree or sea change educational opportunities, we all sincerely wish you every happiness in wherever your travels may take you. The footprint that you have left is very large and your dedication, knowledge, commitment, positivity, and energy will be missed and along with many of your other attributes the “Belridge Bounce-Back” ethos that you instilled will continue to be acknowledged and appreciated. Au Revoir and good luck with your many journeys and adventures that you have ahead.
With the start of every new School Year, we also welcome many new staff to Team Belridge and however, we are pleased to announce that Ms Lauren Thompson will be stepping into the Deputy Principal role in Senior Secondary. Congratulations Lauren! Along with our new Student Services Coordinator, Mrs Sandra Parsons, other staff joining our team are Mrs Emma Bainbridge, Mrs Erin Duncombe, Ms Jo Alban, and Mr Glenn Wakefield- we look forward to working with you all!
At the commencement of the 2023 School year, parents will be receiving some paperwork from the school which includes updated medical information, Online Services Agreements and Therapy Service Provision. We currently have approximately 90 therapists that visit our school and the management of timetabling, curriculum access and space are proving to be a challenge, and, in line with DoE Policy it is important that all aspects of this service delivery are considered and that the Service Providers complete a Service Schedule as required. It is also important that families consider the fact that some therapy provision may be better delivered outside of the school context.
On behalf of the entire Belridge Community I would like to wish all our families, students and staff a safe and Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Year. We look forward to seeing you all back in 2023.
With best wishes,
Jenine Wall
Principal

Middle School News
With the end of the year finally here, I would like to thank all of our middle school students and staff for their ongoing dedication, enthusiasm and outstanding work ethic throughout the 2022 school year. I would also like to thank our parents, carers and families, for your ongoing support this year, it is greatly appreciated.
Middle school will be welcoming a new group of students which will make up our year 7 cohort for 2023. The new students completed their final transition day and were greeted by their future middle school peers. I would best describe the atmosphere amongst students on the last transition day as a real buzz, students were so enthusiastic to start their new journey here at Belridge SESC.
Middle school students have said their final farewells to our graduating year 12 students, and we have also had to say goodbye to a couple of middle school students who are moving away and starting new adventures elsewhere. Middle school students and staff wish the graduating students all the best as they transition into life beyond school.
I’m so proud of our students. We have a school of passionate, engaged and enthusiastic young people who excel and display their talents in so many different ways. It has been wonderful to see the confidence and pride grow in each and every one of them over the last 12 months. We have celebrated the achievement of many students and staff this term and throughout the year, and I am constantly reflecting on the growth, progress, and maturity of the middle school students, especially those transitioning into senior school. Student achievement has been demonstrated across a range of areas including academics, sporting ability, creative and artistic strengths, social engagement endeavours and through several other areas where our students have been able to demonstrate their talents and strengths.
I would like to sincerely, thank all of our Teachers and Education Assistants for their tireless efforts and support. What an outstanding group of individuals they are. their passion, dedication, energy, hard work, flexibility and love of the students is second to none! The strength of commitment found in our staff who continually strive to do their very best to ensure our students learn and have success. Staff always go above and beyond the call of duty. It is seen in the professional way in which they meet many challenges and care unconditionally for every child in our school. They are greatly appreciated for all that they do!
Finally, on behalf of the middle school cohort, we would like to farewell Mrs Wendy Hughes, Senior School Deputy Principal. I have thoroughly enjoyed our close working partnership over the last five years, working together with staff, parents, students and the community. She will be greatly missed but we wish her all the best on her new adventures.
I wish each and every one of you a very happy, safe and restful holiday and am excited about the opportunities and successes of the 2023 school year.
Thank you and best wishes.

Senior School News
My time at Belridge Secondary ESC is coming to a close. I have opted for a tree change and will not be returning in 2023. I will be taking Long Service Leave during Term 1 and travelling around Oz.
Over the past five years it has been my pleasure to guide and support students in the senior secondary school on their journey to life beyond school. I have worked with a very dedicated team of Teachers and EA's who have ensured that student development and welfare is at the core of what we do. Congratulations to the Year 11 students who completed their Certificate I in Agrifoods (Fee for Service arrangement NM TAFE RTO 52786) with Lecturer Mrs Kath Smith, Year 12 students who completed Certificate II Focus Skills for Employment Pathways (Auspice iVET RTO 40548) Lecturer Mr Tom Cann and all Year 11s and 12s who successfully achieved Endorsed Programs in ASDAN and DFES Recruit Cadet level.
All in all it has been a very busy term, particularly with the Year 10's out at Work Place Learning, the parent information evenings and all of the Year 12 Graduation activities.
We had a wonderful time at the 'Belridge Big Day In' at school on Tuesday the 13th of December. Students enjoyed the silent disco, live band music, games, ninja course and DFES sausage sizzle.
My best wishes to all the Belridge Secondary ESC School Community - take care and stay safe!

Over the year, we have become like a 7-1 school family. Our 7-1 family have overcome challenges and grown together from day one of the students' high school journey to the end of the year. It is a little sad, having it come to an end, but we all have so many wonderful memories together.
From all the staff in 7-1, we wish the students a very Merry Christmas and all the best for next year.

Whilst accomplishing our IEP goals, our students were also looking back on their Year 7 journey through revisiting the topics that we have learned in HASS, Health and Science.
We have enjoyed celebrating James and Justin's' birthdays and enjoyed some Christmas activities too.
Wishing everyone a wonderful holiday break, take care and we will see you all next year.

Ben is our livewire, full of fun and mischief, life of the party and fearless when going for the ball. When we visited Edith Cowan University in Joondalup for a tabloid games session early in Term 4, the lecturer in charge labelled him a 'firecracker' after witnessing him taking on the young adult students for the volleyball and successfully winning it time after time.
Charlie is creative, thoughtful, writes amazingly creative stories and is very artistic. He enjoys sport and art and is often seen reading Manga graphic novels along with Cormac.
Cormac is our quiet achiever who excels at Maths, is a fount of knowledge, and quietly involves himself in the mischief of Ben and Charlie. He is also artistic and loves music, Manga graphic novels and cooking.
Ben, Charlie, and Cormac are our ‘Three Musketeers’, wherever one is the others aren’t far away.
Jacob is our practical joker with many a comical retort and has developed a love of Dogman, Catman and Diary of a Wimpy Kid books over the year. He is our expert about everything to do with trains and our Perth Rail system.
Sawyer is a friend to everyone. He is kind, helpful and was elected as one of our school student councillors. Sawyer has a great sense of humour and is always happy.
Marcus is very sporty. He loves to run and is very hard to catch. Marcus excels at dance and listening to Marcus read aloud from his book is a joy as he is so expressive, and the story comes alive.
Ruby loves horses and regularly goes horse riding. She is artistic, loves cooking, flowers, and has a beautiful smile. She loves the opportunity to dress up on occasions such as Book Week and Roman Banquet. At recess and lunch time she can often be found with the Year 8 girls.
It is gratifying to watch how well all the members of our class relate to each other and are all willing to share a joke. We have enjoyed our journey through 2022.
Thank you to our highly skilled and dedicated Education Assistants Mrs McDade, Mrs Ranasinghe and Ms Dunstan who have worked with our class this year. You are so important to us all.
Thank you too, all our parents for your support in educating your amazing children!
Wishing everyone a safe, happy and joyous Christmas and holiday period and a New Year that is full of happiness.

The students from 8-1 have had a terrific, amazing and remarkable year. They have accomplished so many goals, learnt new skills and have developed fantastic friendships.
All the students have improved in every learning area. In Design & Technology they have worked with different materials and made amazing projects. In Home Ec they developed precise measurement skills, safety in the kitchen and produced some fabulous food to enjoy. In Dance, students have had a chance to perform in front of an audience as well as learning some groovy cool dance moves.
The highlight for the students has been the new 'Ninja' course. All term we have been practicing various moves to use on the course. We have been able to use the course as a sensory break and as part of our daily fitness sessions. All students have earnt their official Ninja licences.
Wishing all our family a happy and safe break and we are looking forward to seeing everyone back next year.

This term, we made amazing Christmas craft using recycling materials to sell at our Market Day stall. The students did a wonderful job using their sales skills (particularly trying to sell things off for double the price!) and getting lots of customers visiting the stall. We managed to sell everything we made!
The students created such things as Santa pots, reindeer brownies, Christmas candles, shovels in D&T, and much more.
Well done to you all for another fantastic term.

The class proudly displayed and sold their wares at our annual Market Day. This included coasters from D&T and chocolate balls from Home Economics. Our in-class projects were also a hit including some fabulous framed ink artwork and cards, magical message in a bottle necklaces, terrific tote bags and rocking reindeers.
This term we have been reading the well-known novel Holes by Louis Sashar and explored how every choice has a consequence and the importance of friendships. We are all looking forward to enjoying the movie for one of our end of term events.
We were all extremely excited to try out the new ninja course. Over the last two weeks we have spent some time there having fun and improving our ninja skills.
A big shout out to the specialist teaching staff including our amazing Science Teacher, Mrs Semmens who celebrated the class's successful year in Science with a value-added excursion to Scitech where we explored the constellations in the planetarium, discovered how to make a BANG in the Hot and Cold Show and became trainee Astronauts in the new exhibition space.
Special mentions to our amazing 8-3 staff team of Mr Mac, Mrs Culshaw, Mrs Blackie and Miss Alban for supporting this great group of students to make the most of their learning opportunities.
It has been a fantastic year in 8-3. Thank you to all the families for their support throughout the year and I hope you all have relaxing , safe and enjoyable summer break.

Everyone enjoyed the chance to be more creative as we got ready for Market Day. We decided to keep going with our Harry Potter classroom theme and made items that could be found at Hogwarts. These included chocolate frogs and quills! A special thanks to the EA's in our class this term Mrs Bridge, Mrs Bradford and Mrs O'Rourke for assisting with our crafts and the running of our stall.

This term, the class participated in a series of training sessions at HBF Arena, Joondalup. Our students thoroughly enjoyed the variety of exercises, led by our trainer, Michael.
The recently held Market Day was a great success, with our students working very hard, making a variety of items, including chopping boards, tie-dyed bags and biscuits in-a-cup, which all sold very quickly. Our thanks to everyone who came along and supported the day!
The students recently finished reading their class novel, 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets'. The students thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and completing the accompanying activities.
Thank you to all parents and grandparents for your support this year, and to the staff in our room (Mrs Speed and Ms Gellard) for your wonderful efforts. Thank you also to the fabulous students, who consistently worked to the best of their ability, I wish you all the best in Upper School!
Enjoy the holidays everyone!

The students have participated in many incursions, including Chinese Dragons, an Indigenous smoking ceremony and a visit from a Cuddly Animal Farm. They also enjoyed bike riding, gardening and messy art.
We have been working hard this semester on our communication skills, focusing on requesting.
Market Day was a great success, the students work was completely sold out!!! On the warmer days the students have enjoyed water play, watering the garden and taking care of the equipment.
The students are currently creating some Christmas themed artwork to bring home at the end of the year, including some delicious cookies. They created their Christmas Wish List for Santa and these were sent home for you to forward to him.
We have been fortunate enough to have a Prac Student with us for some of the term, she worked with each of the students to create some Indigenous Art, listening to stories and learning some dances.
All of us in MAG1 would like to wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Best wishes

Wow! I cannot believe that it is the end of the year already. MAG2 students have continued to work hard in all curriculum areas and enjoying the variation of activities included in our timetable.
The students have continued to support Cobra Café in making biscuits to accompany coffee order throughout the week. The students have been commended on their efforts in their work during cooking and have received amazing feedback from staff – with some staff even commenting that they order a coffee just to receive a biscuit.
Our regular off-site programs at Landsdale Farm and High Flyers were a huge success this year. Our class worked on developing their agricultural work skills at Landsdale Farm while enjoying the change of environment from the classroom. At High Flyers, significant progress was made with many students trialling different equipment including the hanging ring and the highest balance beam! Well done MAG2 on the progress you have made in these programs this semester.
In week 9 with Mrs Semmens, our students went on their end of year Science excursion to the Zoo where they made the monumental effort to see all the animals in their enclosures. This excursion provided the opportunity to consolidate their learning from their biological science unit. The students observed native animals in the Australian Bushwalk and Wetlands, and non-native animals in the Rainforest Retreat, Asian Rainforest, African Savanah and Amazonia. It is safe to say that the day was enjoyed by all with many memorable moments to finish the year with.
A big thank you to our wonderful Education Assistants – Mrs Devaney, Mrs Mac, Mrs Murray, Mrs Hogben, Mr Mann and Mrs King. Our students are supported to engage in valuable learning experience due to your enduring commitment to their success.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the families of our students – THANK YOU for your ongoing support this year. We are able to do our work so seamlessly with your support!
Finally, to the amazing students of MAG2 – it has been a privilege to teach you this year and I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Have a relaxing and enjoyable break!

There was a DFES excursion for all Year 11 classes to Swan Valley where each class had to work as a team to build a successful catapult that could fire an egg the furthest without breaking. Well done to 11-1 who won that competition. Pizza back at school for lunch topped off a fantastic day.
Another DFES excursion to Mullaloo Beach was rather hot, but the students did an excellent job at picking up rubbish at the park and on the beach. They then had to sort what could be recycled and what needed to go in the waste bin. Highlight of the day was a sausage sizzle cooked by the DFES team.
The students on Market Day liked selling what they had created in class such as Snowman's Soup, Candy puzzles, funky tie dye socks, grass heads, Tic Tac Toe games, Xmas wreaths and lucky dips. They also enjoyed spending time with family and friends while looking and purchasing items from stalls of other classes.
At the Year 12 Graduation Assembly, Theo who is our student councillor presented a cheque to the RSPCA which was the students chosen charity. This was in recognition of all their hard work throughout the year at the Easter and Mother's Day stalls as well as their weekly folding of pamphlets.
11-1 students finished the year off by joining with their mainstream peers for 'The Big Day In' with a variety of fun activities for all to enjoy on the school oval and a final class party.
It has been a pleasure to teach 11-1 students this year and I wish them all the best for Year 12. I hope everyone has an excellent Christmas and a safe holiday!

11-2 students continue to demonstrate excelled teamwork, kindness and compassion. They continue to support each other in class, social and practical tasks.
The students went to the Swan Valley and Mullaloo Beach to end the year. They used their teamwork skills to build a catapult and launched tennis balls at Swan Valley. At Mullaloo, they cleaned up the beach and sorted rubbish into recyclable and general. 11-2 also held their stall for Market Day. They sold soap, candles and bookmarks. They also enjoyed shopping at the other class stalls.
In class 11-2 students have been finishing off all their work for the year. They have also been playing sport with the other Year 11's every Monday. As the term winds down they have had to say goodbye to some class members and celebrated with cake and a small party.
11-2 students have been a great team this year. They have grown and matured so much over the course of the year. They have worked very hard in class and completed all required work for the year without complaint. Thank you parents and staff, for your contributions to making this a successful year.

Monday's ASDAN lessons have come to an end now as all files were submitted for external moderation in November. I am pleased to say that all portfolios passed, and students received fantastic feedback about the quality of their work.
With ASDAN finished now, we have picked up an extra period of sport. This term, we have been playing Tee-Ball. The students from our class, and the 11-2 class have combined to develop skills in fielding and batting. There has been noticeable progress in each student's game play, with them learning the order of play, where to field, how to field and where to best throw the ball to get runners out. We will continue Tee-Ball for the remainder of the year.
As the final week of WPL ends, all students are to be commended for their maturity and professionalism. This valuable experience has given them all the opportunity to get a sense of what it is like to be in the workforce and the skills and attributes desirable for future employment. Thank you to all the excellent Education Assistants that support our students on this day.
In English, students recently completed a body of work called Personality Instrument for Teens and the Holland Code Test. Here, they were to read and answer questions that focused on general orientation, modes of operation, information gathering and decision-making. Students then gave themselves a score under each category (realistic, investigative, artistic, social, enterprising and conventional).
It has been a fast and furious finish to what has been an extremely busy year. I would like to take this opportunity to thank again all the Education Assistants that have worked with Class 11-3 this year. Your patience, hard work and dedication to student success has ensured that all students have achieved their goals this year. As your teacher, I thank you for the support, understanding and commitment to the plans and programs that we have run this year.
To all the families and students, I wish you a peaceful and joyful Christmas and I hope you enjoy a well-earned break over summer.

Term 4 has been filled with many lasts for 12-2, last presentation at an Assembly; last Market Day and their last excursions with DFES. The excursions with DFES have provided many memorable moments for this class and more importantly many funny moments (usually you Zoe!!)
In November we have had bike riding around Neil Hawkins Park and two camp days at Swan Valley Adventure Centre. The first camp day involved abseiling and the commando course - highlights were the look on Liam's face when he overcame his fear of abseiling and Zoe when she not only completed her first abseil but was the bravest of the group to accompany Xander (already brave!) on the very difficult overhang abseil. The second camp day was screaming along on the flying fox and the joy of canoeing down the river, where the outstanding crew from Ethiopia won the country challenge (that may or many not be true, however Jen and her crewmate may have bribed the writer of this Newsletter!!!)
Thank you DFES - Mr V and Mrs Bond as well as 12-1 students and staff. It has been a fantastic term and a wonderful year.
Ms Hobson, Mrs Wearing, Ms Jacqui & Mrs Willis
Market Day
The class stalls were heaped with items made by the students from candles, Christmas decorations and grassheads to woodwork and metalwork. The café was busy serving barista coffee, hot chocolates and 'Belridge Teas' and the DFES sausage sizzle was sizzling serving over 300 hotdogs.
For the third year, staff independently ran a cupcake fundraising stall in memory of a much loved staff member - Jenny Winston. A massive $881.00 dollars was raised which will be donated to Breast Cancer WA in Jenny's memory.
Thank you to students, staff and our Belridge Community for making it such a wonderful day.
BIG Day In Festival
Belridge Education Support Centre alongside Belridge Secondary College held the ‘BIG DAY IN ‘on Tuesday the 13th of December. The inaugural Belridge Festival was a HUGE success! The day could not have happened without the whole Belridge community. The two schools met regularly in Term 4 to design and book in a number of performers and activities that entertained ALL students in a ‘festival style’ event.
Activities and entertainment on the day included, but not limited to: Food trucks, Ice cream truck and Sausage Sizzle, Inflatable Soccer Dart Board, Mini Putt Putt course, Lawn Games, Sumo Suit Arena, City of Joondalup Youth Truck, X-Box Gaming Trailer, Dunk Tank, Water Fight Arena, Petting Zoo, Police car, Silent Disco, Live music on stage, Various sporting teams/activities, Super Heroes including Spider-Man, Hulk, Batman and Thor, we opened our new Ninja Warrior ESC playground and we had Dr Froth come to entertain us with GIANT Bubbles.
Thank you to all staff for their help in preparing and executing this event. We had staff from both schools taking payments of tickets, supervising events, monitoring the toilets, collecting equipment, setting up/packing up, cooking sausages, supervising the students unable to attend, taking photos- the list goes on. Without you all, this event would not have happened!
Despite a shaky start with the weather, the students had an absolute blast with lots of smiles, laughter and positive energy out there yesterday. It is wonderful to be able to celebrate the positive behaviour of so many students as ‘Two Schools, One Community’.
Farewell to the Class of 2022
