PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Wasn’t it only yesterday that I was wishing you all a restful break? How is it possible that we are already back? In the spirit of the Thanksgiving season I want to share things I am grateful for as Principal of Joan MacQueen Middle School. I am thankful to work with and among a tremendous group of supportive educators who care relentlessly for all of our students. I am grateful that my educational journey has brought me to this special place. The natural beauty, the feeling of community, and the overwhelming sense of family that I experience in Alpine on a daily basis fill me with a sense of Thanks.
Now that we are back it is going to be a sprint and a whirlwind as we approach the winter months. But there will be time for all things, including our winter theater performances, trips to Finance Park for 7th and 8th grades, and spirit celebrations as we head to Winter Break which will be here before we know it. But before that, take a load off and enjoy this latest edition of the Dust Devil Weekly.

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK: Focus on Student Dress Consequences
In a letter emailed to JMMS families, dated September 28, 2023, I addressed some concerns about student dress, and stressed the importance of a school to home partnership in helping our students understand that school is an important place where important work gets done. I am happy to report that incidents of inappropriate dress have declined significantly. Thank you to all families who understood the importance of this topic and discussed school dress with your children.
Unfortunately there are still a few incidents that arise, and we wanted to let you know what the school will now do if a student violates the AUSD Board adopted dress code (BP 5132.a). Students who are found to be in violation of the guidelines will always be given an opportunity to self-correct their dress without further consequence. Students unable to self-correct their dress, will be provided a school “loaner” shirt or pants. Students who chronically violate the dress guidelines will receive a parent contact, and further violations could result in additional consequences, not excluding serving time in the JMMS Alternative Learning Center.
Thank you all for your continuing support as we continue on our mission of making the best Middle School in San Diego!
