Message from Mrs. Phelan
Greetings,
Thanksgiving break is only two and a half days away! I hope your time is filled with good food, friends, family, and laughter! Oh yes, and a little shopping.
Wednesday, students are dismissed at 12 noon. Please plan accordingly. There is no LEDP on Wednesday.
We will have a short spirit week beginning Monday with crazy sock day; on Tuesday, wear your school spirit or team shirts, and come to school in your pajamas on Wednesday.
World Cup Soccer starts today. Host country Qatar will play Ecuador. Jackie McCready is routing for her native country. Like Jackie, many of our students and their families are excited about this event. The World Cup Football (Soccer) draws over 3.2 billion viewers from all over the world. To put it into perspective, the Olympics has 400 million viewers. The World Cup takes place every four years, unlike most sporting finals, which occur once a year. Around the world, people gather in coffee shops and sporting restaurants, and many large outdoor viewing parties occur in cities hosted by the government.
The host country, Qatar, is the smallest country ever to host the World Cup. Because Qatar gets as hot as 108 degrees in the summer, they needed to switch the game to winter, where the average temperature is still 84.
We have a large population of Brazilian students. They will no doubt be rooting for their home country as this year's favorite for the title. World Cup Soccer lasts through December. Find ways to leverage their interest by bringing fun facts and cultural traditions. Your kids are excited to tell you about their team and how their families watch this special tournament together.
You may be asked about the controversy the games have created. The host country, Qatar, relied on migrant workers to build stadiums and other infrastructure for the games. Human rights organizations have raised concerns about worker deaths and safety. Qatar is also known for its blatant discrimination against women and LGBTQ people. Many people are asking for a boycott of the games. This makes celebrating the games very complicated especially given our commitment to equity. However, ignoring such an important event that is a point of pride for many of our students, especially those from Brazil, would be hurtful. I think we can celebrate World Cup pride while acknowledging the controversy.
If you haven't read Dr. Galdston's Update, please do. I've taken out the presentation of the school colors and furnishing please take a look. There are several cool pictures of the Media Center and Learning Commons.
With a grateful heart,
Stacy

Phillips Building Parking Lot on Spring Street
As many of you may have noticed, we been placing orange cones at the end of the Spring Street drive during arrival and dismissal times. We are doing this to keep parents from pulling into the driveway while students are entering or exiting the building.
Message from Deb Opar, Literacy and Social Studies Coordinator
This message is directed to fifth grade parents.
Upcoming Social Studies & Reading Units
In Grade 5 Social Studies, students spend the year studying United States history. In November, students will study Enslavement and Resistance in Colonial America. Throughout this unit, students will have the opportunity to learn from sources such as maps, articles, video, music, and podcasts as they explore meaningful questions such as, “What is inequality?” and, “How have marginalized communities acted to obtain equality?” Curricular resources for this unit were curated by experts at Primary Source who have also provided Professional Development for our teachers at the onset of this unit. Unit goals include:
Research what enslaved Africans’ lives were like through first-person accounts
Describe methods of resistance to slavery through music, escape, and revolt
In January, students will integrate Social Studies, Reading, and Writing through a study of the American Revolution.
What are the events that led up to the American Revolution?
How do I synthesize information across texts when learning about history?
Ms. Opar also shared additional resources for our teachers prior to starting this unit.
Learning for Justice Article: A Care Plan for Honest History and Difficult Conversations, an article published in the most recent edition that directly connects with the work we are doing throughout this unit to teach important and hard history and strategies for supporting students.
An introductory lesson (slides here) has been added to the unit to highlight the rich civilizations of West Africa. This lesson allows students to explore the achievements of West African civilization prior to the era of capture and enslavement. Slides are also in the shared drive.
