CK Burns Student Wins Rotary's K-5 T-Shirt Design Contest
Congratulations to CK Burns third-grader James Marines on winning first place in the K-5 division of the T-Shirt Design Contest held by the Biddeford Saco Rotary Club’s Red Ribbon Committee. As the first-place winner, he won a cash prize of $250 and his design will be printed on the front of thousands of K-5 t-shirts given to every student in Biddeford, Dayton, Old Orchard Beach, and Saco during the week of April 25th.
Room 14 learned about Canva and created learning portfolios to share with their grownups at conferences.
CK Burns celebrates the "week of the young child" at Saco's Pre-K
The excitement was bubbling before the kids even left Burns. Five students eager to read at Saco's Pre-K boarded the bus with literacy specialist Deb Robinson.
Third graders Liam Balfour and Robert Skoczerski from Mrs. Gallant's class and fourth-graders Adele Foy, Victoria Fersch, and Alannah Collin from Mrs. Libby’s class shared some feelings about the trip they were taking:
“I am so excited, I can’t wait to read to them”
“I love little kids”
“I know one of the kids that go to Pre-K!”
They were each tasked with finding a book they felt comfortable reading out loud. Once at the Pre-K, they were assigned a small group/classroom. On the way back to Burns, this is what could be overheard:
“They were really good listeners.”
“They had such nice manners.”
“The kids were all smiling!”
“I wish I could go read to them every day!”
“They asked questions, it was good to know they were curious.”
The five students shared that they loved how attentive the Pre-K students were and how they clapped for them at the end of their story.
When asked about some favorite memories, Liam and Robert shared that they liked how the Pre-K kids all said their names and introduced themselves.
Ally stated “Reading to them was my favorite. I love reading to kids so much!”
Victoria shared “The kids laughing at the pictures and enjoying the story was the best part.”
Adele told Mrs. Robinson, “I like how the kids all voted for the book they liked best and I loved having my picture taken with the class!”
All the Pre-K teachers and staff were so appreciative and very happy to have the Burns students
as guest readers. They hope we can do it again!
