Social Emotional Learning Update
September is a foundational month to develop strong school communities as students and staff settle into the new school year.
The Science of Learning and Development
Social emotional development is embedded in daily classroom instruction and learning. Structured group work helps students develop relationships, communication skills, and collaboration. Students are also given opportunities for self-directed work or play to develop self-management and decision-making.
Our teachers also thoughtfully and carefully include social-emotional components in the school day. They identify the social and emotional competencies their students need for academic work and incorporate ways to learn these skills in their lesson plan. They also use "teachable moments" to help guide students through social and emotional challenges, such as helping students mediate a conflict.
Teachers and staff use restorative practices to help students resolve conflict. Restorative school discipline practices—also called positive discipline, responsive classroom, or empowerment—focus on fostering a sense of community within classrooms to prevent conflict, and on reacting to misconduct by encouraging students to accept responsibility and rebuild relationships.
In addition to fostering healthy relationships among our students, LASD is also committed to strong partnerships with our families and community organizations to build stronger, healthier school communities. Mental health therapists, psychologists and wellness coordinators provide services to our students, in addition to family engagement and facilitation around student mental health. We also connect families to community services when needed.
Our teachers' mental health is also essential for strong school communities. LASD supports staff with mental health services, financial coaching and professional development in effective communication.
To ensure we continue to improve in our efforts to support strong school communities, LASD conducts student, family and staff surveys to gather data and inform our social emotional programs. We work with PTA, and our teacher and staff unions as partners to continue our work together to support all students and families.
