Anne Arundel County 4-H Happenings
March 2022
Hello 4-H Families
March: Four Hs and Thriving Youth
In January, we looked at 'Hands for service' and developing youth spark. February, we discussed 'Heart for loyalty' by expressing empathy, compassion and developing positive/ trusting relationships. Now on to Health: “I pledge my health to better living” means understanding one’s own needs and working on positive social, emotional, and intellectual well-being. While participating in 4-H programs, youth experiences help them learn to manage feelings, make healthy lifestyle choices, take on self-responsibility and build self-esteem in a safe environment. This is possible in part due to the expectation that 4-H programs provide an environment in which youth feel a sense of belonging.
Belonging is the connectedness young people feel to a group*. All youth want to feel included in a meaningful way. This document is an overview of general characteristics of development at various developmental stages. It also includes ideas on how to meet the needs of the age group.
Ways to enhance a sense of belonging and increase positive healthy lifestyles:
- allow time to share family, cultural traditions, foods, and music
- share strategies (adults - youth; youth - youth) to use when one feels frustrated or uncomfortable
- incorporate time to reflect on what was learned as well as any struggles to demonstrate that everyone has set backs
- create a shared set of expectations
- include ice breakers and team building activities that provide a variety of topics and methods of engaging
Check out what was shared from our amazing clubs in last month's 'Heart for Loyalty' and developing positive relationships in the ICYMI section below.
Regards,
Gretchen

Helping Hands
We are compiling a list of volunteers, which we are affectionately calling 'Helping Hands', that may be interested in assisting with judging (record books, contests, variety show entries, fair entries), coaching a team, sponsoring an activity club, assisting with Fair set-up, or establishing partnerships. These are simply options, not required tasks, that we need assistance with - most only require a few hours here and there should we put a call out. Many of these volunteer opportunities can come from the community, UME certification is not required. If interested in being on this list, please email Gretchen at gsumbrum@umd.edu.
UNIT/CLUB & GROUP LEADERS HUDDLE
Thank you, Unit and Group Leaders, for submitting your Annual Forms. We appreciate your assistance is helping us fulfill this state 4-H requirement.
Kudos to all that attended the Volunteer/Club Leader Workshop on the 28th. We had an interactive workshop that allowed us to get to know fellow volunteers, review the foundational pieces (the "soil") of high quality 4-H programming, and engaged in activities to use at events. Thanks for attending.
Youth and adult leaders should work together to establish the plan allowing youth officers to step up and take responsibility. It may take more time to work through the process, yet once established you will find the time spent is worth the effort. Youth begin to feel a sense of belonging, positive youth-adult relationships are formed, and there is often more youth engagement because the work done is in an area of interest, a spark. The underlined terms are the building blocks of all 4-H programs, the Developmental Context.
HERE'S THE SCOOP
4-H is America's largest youth development organization-empowering nearly 6 million young people with the skills to lead for a lifetime. 4-H is delivered by Cooperative Extension - a community of more than 100 public universities across the nation that provides experience where young people learn by doing. In 4-H programs, youth complete hands-on projects in areas like health, science, agriculture and civic engagement where they receive guidance from adult mentors and are encouraged to take on proactive leadership roles. 4-H is in every county and parish in the country - through in-school and after-school programs, school and community clubs, and camps. Our network of 500,000 volunteers and 3,500 4-H professionals provide caring and supportive mentoring to all 6 million 4-Hers, helping them grow into true leaders in life.🍀
