MWES Counseling Update
September 2023 - Mrs. Franklin, MWES School Counselor
Welcome Back!
Getting back to school is always such an exciting time! I'm so thankful to see all of our new and returning Braves! I hope that your family had an amazing summer break and that the transition back to school has been a good one!
Character Strong
Our new school wide character educaiton program is called Character Strong. This program in one word is - AMAZING! The elementary program is called Purposeful People. The program focuses on 3 main components: Be Kind (social skills and conflict-resolution); Be Strong (executive funtioning, organizing and goal setting) and Be Well (wellness and emotion regulation). Each month focuses on one of these components through the lens of a character trait. In Auugust we started with a Kindness Kickoff. Our word for September is Respect. Each student paticipates in a Purposeful People lesson each morning with their classroom teacher.
Character Strong provides information to families each month to allow you to engage with your child(ren) at home. There are discussion prompts and family challenges that I think your family will really enjoy! You will find links those materials below.
Recommennded Books on Respect
A Bad Case of Stripes
Camilla Cream loves lima beans, but she never eats them. Why? Because the other kids in her school don''t like them. And Camilla Cream is very, very worried about what other people think of her. In fact, she''s so worried that she''s about to break out in… a bad case of stripes!
One
Blue is a quiet color. Red's a hothead who likes to pick on Blue. Yellow, Orange, Green, and Purple don't like what they see, but what can they do? When no one speaks up, things get out of hand -- until One comes along and shows all the colors how to stand up, stand together, and count. As budding young readers learn about numbers, counting, and primary and secondary colors, they also learn about accepting each other's differences and how it sometimes just takes one voice to make everyone count.
The Wall
A father and his young son have come to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial to find the name of the grandfather the little boy never knew. They share the sadness as well as the pride of having Grandpa's name there. This moving account is beautifully told from a young child's point of view.

In Case You Missed It - School Based Therapy Options & Referrals to Outside Agencies
We have mental health providers that work in our building to provide school-based therapy services for students from outside agencies. MWES has partnerships with BCPS LCSW, Kelsey Reynolds, Stephanie Volpert with Seven Counties Services and Zanda Boggs with Lecorgan Counseling. If there is a need to refer your child to any of these agencies, I would personally call to discuss this with you.
I can also help you to find an outside agency/provider if you would like for your child to receive services outside of the school day.
