We have lots of thank you's this week. Thank you to everyone who pitched in to support Staff Appreciation Week. It has been a blast at school this week, and we absolutely feel the love. Thank you for helping to make it special.
Also, thank you for your support of all of the service learning projects occurring this month. Service Learning is a part of our character education work. Service Learning is an upgrade from community service in that (a) it's connected to content and curriculum, and (b) we build in opportunities for students to reflect and learn in the process.
In the winter months, students studied the character of people in the past (MLK and others) and the present (our School Resource Officer, Mr. Franitza, and other school staff), and then examined their own character strengths. In April, we challenged classes to notice a need in their community, and decide how their own character strengths could help to meet that need. There are classes building bat houses, collecting for the homeless, studying our recycling habits and compost potential, and fixing up our recess equipment, just to name a few.
Ask your child what his or her class is working on, and thank you for sending in money for popcorn and bake sales. The Penny War happens next week, and I believe a lemonade sale will be coming in short order, too!
