A Message from Mrs. Plascencia
Dear CCE Families,
Welcome 2024! I wish our CCE students, staff, and families a Happy New Year!! In 2023, we appreciated the support you have provided our students and their teachers. Educating children is an "all hands on deck" process. Our staff has appreciated the teamwork with our families which helped our students to be successful. I hope the winter break allowed each of you time with family and friends.
January is the month that we return to our school routines. Please remember to start thinking about earlier bedtimes, setting a morning routine, and building a schedule for your child to be able to be at school on time and ready for the day. I know after several weeks off and Monday holidays, it can be hard to get back into the routines. Our little ones really thrive when they have had enough sleep and don't feel hurried out the door to school in the morning. If you need additional support to establish routines for your mornings or evenings, please feel free to reach out to your classroom teacher, they will be happy to help. It is very important for all our students to come to school every day and on time. We will be having an Attendance Contest coming soon! Please be make sure to send your child to school, as they will have an opportunity to win prizes!
If you have a new phone number or address, please update your information in PowerSchool. If you have questions or need assistance, please call the office at 323-773-1804.
Thank you for allowing us to educate your children and working with you toward a bright future. We are here to work with you to provide the best education possible. If you have questions please contact me.
As always, thank you all for your continued support and GOOOOOO EAGLES!!🦅
In gratitude,
Mrs. Deanna Plascencia
Principal

The Great Kindness Challenge
January 22 - January 26
Cesar E. Chavez Elementary is proudly participating in The Great Kindness Challenge, a week-long program dedicated to creating a culture of kindness and compassion in communities worldwide. To help our students practice kindness and put their compassion into action, they will receive a Great Kindness Challenge checklist. We will encourage all students to complete as many acts of kindness as possible at school and hope they feel inspired to continue them at home! Together, we will lift each other up, cheer each other on and show the world that KINDNESS MATTERS!
A Message From the School Nurse
Limiting the spread of germs that cause illness is a goal of our school community. During the cold / flu season we need to be extra careful to prevent the spread of illness. The following are things that you can do to help:
- Hand washing is the most helpful action one can take to prevent the spread of germs. Hands should be washed after blowing nose, using the bathroom and before eating. Please reinforce the need for frequent hand washing with your student.
- If your student is ill, please keep student home from school until student is fever free, diarrhea free, and vomit free for 24 hours without any medication.
- If your student has a rash that you think may be contagious, please do not send student to school. Call your doctor for advice or an appointment for evaluation.
- If your student or a sibling has been exposed to chicken pox, measles, mumps, or any contagious rashes please notify the school nurse as soon as possible.
- Please notify the school nurse if your student has tested positive for mono, strep, or influenza A or B.
By working together, we can have a healthy school community. Thank you for your cooperation. If you have any questions, please contact our Health Office at 323-887-7900 Ext. 5163

CalFresh
CalFresh (formerly known as Food Stamps) is an entitlement program that provides monthly benefits to assist low-income households in purchasing the food they need to maintain adequate nutritional levels. In general, these benefits are for any food or food product intended for human consumption. Benefits may not be used for items such as alcoholic beverages, cigarettes, or paper products.
New Years Resolutions!!
To go along with the tradition of making New Years Resolutions, the first topic of 2024 should be goal setting. While at home, have your child reflect on their strenghts over the last year and help them identify areas of growth for the upcoming year. Work with your child and focus on setting long-term and short-term goals that will allow them to make small accomplishments to help them work up to their ultimate goal for the school year. Check out this resource to learn more about how you can support your students in achieving their goals:
December Student of the Month
Cesar E. Chavez Elementary is honored to celebrate students who were nominated for Student of the Month in November. These student were nominated because they met their SOAR expectations of Self-Control, Owned a Positive Attitude, Acted Responsibly, & Respected All, and the demonstrated high academic achievement. This does not happen without the support and guidance of excellent parents, teachers, and friends!
Thank you to our PTA for providing goodies to all our students who were honored. Then next Student of the Month will be on January 31 at 8:30am in the cafeteria.
Thank you everyone!

CCE is a PBIS School
Cesar E. Chavez Elementary is proud to be a PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) school! Our PBIS systems help to reinforce our students' academic, social emotional, and behavioral needs. As part of this initiative, we continue to highlight and celebrate positive behaviors through our reward systems. PBIS teaches students the skills to handle barriers to learning and think about the best course of action.
Having a school-wide behavioral approach includes our entire educational community. Our students and staff are able to see that we all support each other and this contributes to our school's success and overall safety. At the beginning of the school year, teachers will review the expected behaviors for students in the classroom, cafeteria, restrooms, playground, library, and hallways. These expectations will be posted in the specific areas around the schools and are included in this newsletter.
Cesar E. Chavez Elementary has adopted the acronym S.O.A.R.(Self-Control, Own a Positive Attitude, Act Responsibly, Respect All). When a positive desired behavior is exhibited, students are recognized and provided a SOARING Eagle ticket. The tickets are redeemed for prizes once a month. Thanks to the support of our PTA, we have been able to provide a variety of prizes to our students. Our students are always very excited when the SOARING Eagle store is open. If you would like to make a donation of prizes to our month SOARING Eagle student store, please contact the main office. Any amount of support is greatly appreciated.
During the months of August and September, we will kick off our PBIS program with lessons on each of our expectations - Self-control, Own a Positive Attitude, Act Responsibly, & Respect All. We will also continue to reinforce these expectations throughout the 2023-2024 school year.
