IMPORTANT WINTER WEAR INFORMATION
During the cold months, it is VERY important to send your student(s) with the appropriate winter wear for outside recess. This includes a Hat, Gloves, Snow Pants, Boots, and most importantly a Winter Jacket. We have seen quite a few students come in only a sweater. Kids will go outside as long as the "feels like" temp is 10* and above. Please send them with their gear just in case they may need it throughout the day.
**Please make sure all snow gear is labeled. It is difficult for staff to differentiate between similar items, such as black snow pants or gloves.**
NEW SKYWARD FEATURE
Back in December, we started the following communication procedures. When your student visits the nurse’s office, there will be an auto-generated email sent to parents/guardians with general information about the visit. If there are any questions regarding the visit, please contact the nurse via email (khunt@nsd2.com). Please do not call the main office with questions for the nurse.
Please check Skyward to make sure your email address is up to date and that notifications are "on". If you have checked to not receive notifications, you will not receive these emails. This will be the main source of notifying you if your student has been to the nurse's office. You will receive a phone call for anything serious or urgent.
*To update your notification settings, please log in to Skyward, Click "My Account" at the top, and then check the boxes accordingly to receive email notifications.
Thank you!

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a relaxing winter break and is ready to start the new year.
In celebration of the snow outside, Kindergarten and 1st graders are making it snow in the computer lab this month. Kindergarten is learning the 3 ways to make snowflakes using the Wixie program (sticker snowflakes, spray can snowflakes, and drawing snowflakes using the paintbrush). We will be using this knowledge to create a picture of a snow globe in the coming weeks. 1st graders will be working on a creative writing project in January. They will be asked to answer the question, “If you could build a magical snowman that never melts, what would your snowman do?” They will be drawing a picture of their snowman and typing 2-3 sentences telling me about it.
2nd & 3rd grade will be moving on to their graphing unit. This will be an introductory unit for 2nd grade since they have not used Google Sheets in the past. They will be learning skills like how to move around on a spreadsheet, how to type inside a cell, how to highlight several cells at a time, how to change spreadsheet data into a graph, how to edit that graph to add titles, and how to change the colors of the bars. 3rd graders will be reviewing all of those skills and then creating a “Favorite Sport” graph using data collected from the students in their class.
4th grade will be learning about making lists in Google Docs during January. We will discuss the 3 types of lists (checklist, numbered list, and bulleted list) and when you would use one type over the other. We will then practice making each type of list and playing around with some formatting options.
5th Grade is doing one of my favorite projects: Stop-motion animation. They began this week taking the Red Ball Challenge. They opened a Google Slide document with a red ball on the left edge of the slide. The challenge was to get the ball to move across the slide to the other edge without using the animation tool. Some of your children came up with very creative ways to make this happen. If you have a 5th grader, make sure to ask them to show you their end product. We will be discussing their techniques in the coming weeks and using them to create a Stop Motion Animation project with a winter theme.

¡Felíz Año Nuevo! As 2023 wound down to a close, so did most of our grade level projects in Spanish. During the month of December, all of the students spent some time exploring the different holiday customs in Mexico. From Las Posadas to the origins of our Poinsettia, many topics and customs were discussed and enjoyed by all.
With the start of 2024, all classes are revving up with new topics and vocabulary in the New Year. Our focus will be getting down to the basics of the Spanish language.
Fifth Graders will be continuing their ongoing study of Spanish vocabulary with their Palabras de Enero. The emphasis this month will be on the review of weather words and winter clothing vocabulary that they have learned in earlier grades.
Fourth Graders will begin learning the basic vocabulary for the parts of the body. We will start by working toward memorization of the vocabulary. Then students will focus on being able to correctly label a diagram of the body at the end of the unit. A variety of activities will be used to help students attain both of these goals.
Third Graders will begin learning the Spanish Alphabet. We will focus on the letters that are unique to the Spanish language, as well as the different sounds made by each vowel and consonant.
**With the coming of winter comes the inevitable seasonal rise in illness. Please note that if your child is in Third, Fourth, or Fifth Grade and misses their weekly Spanish Class, they will be receiving homework to cover their missed assignments. Please be sure to watch for these activities to come home, and be sure that your child brings them back to school when they are completed.
Second Graders will begin the New Year learning the Spanish vocabulary words for El invierno, or the season of winter. This is a continuation of our year long weather unit. We will be learning the words for the weather features of winter, as well as some vocabulary for activities that are unique to those weather conditions.
First Graders are beginning the year with a unit on the family. Basic Spanish vocabulary for the members of the family will be taught. We will be working on many fun activities to give us practice with these important vocabulary words.
Kindergarteners have learned their colors for red and blue, and are on to the color yellow. We will continue our exploration of colors throughout the month. We have also learned the words for circle and square. We will be learning the triangle next. We will continue exploring the basic shapes in conjunction with our colors.
I hope that the new year brings us all good health and prosperity! I also hope that your children are enjoying learning the language of Spanish.

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a wonderful break.
In the library this month, 5th graders will be concentrating on research skills, including skimming and scanning for information, paraphrasing, finding and citing sources, all in preparation to complete a small research project in the library.
4th grade will be learning about what media is and how to use media responsibly.
3rd grade will be participating in the A to Z Geo Challenge. A fun activity where they find the answers to geography questions using atlases and maps.
Grades 1, 2, and kindergarten will be reading about the traditions of the new year celebrated here in the United States based on the solar calendar; as well as the Lunar New Year celebrated in China.

IMPORTANT PTO EVENT INFO
Recently, there have been some younger siblings accompanying parents who are volunteering during the school day, particularly during our most recent holiday party. While we appreciate the enthusiasm and eagerness to involve the whole family, we kindly request that PTO volunteers refrain from bringing younger siblings during their volunteer shifts.
This request is not meant to discourage family involvement; rather, it ensures that our volunteers can focus on their assigned tasks and responsibilities without distraction. Additionally, it helps maintain a safe and organized environment during school activities.
We understand that sometimes unforeseen circumstances may arise, and we appreciate your understanding and cooperation in adhering to this guideline as much as possible. Your commitment to these guidelines ensures the success and smooth operation of our PTO events.
Thank you for your continued support, and we look forward to working together to create memorable experiences for our students!

SmartSocial
As technology gifts may be high on our children's wish lists this season, we're thrilled to introduce our partnership with SmartSocial.com. This platform provides many resources to help safely navigate the digital world.
As the plethora of resources may seem overwhelming at a glance, we recommend starting small and perhaps delving into one of the following topics:
That said, NSD#2 is giving its parents/guardians free access to all of the SmartSocial tools. Just use this link to register: https://smartsocial.com/members?org=nippersinkrichmondburton
This free access is for our students' families only and valid until July 31, 2024. Please do not share the link with non-district families.
Let's make this holiday season not only joyful but also a time for learning and growing in the digital age!
