MPB
The Corbett School District will join the other 196 school districts throughout Oregon to celebrate January as School Board Recognition Month
School board members represent their fellow citizens’ views and priorities in the
complex enterprise of maintaining and running the community’s public schools. They
also reinforce the principle of local control over public education, which is an important,
highly valued aspect of education in Oregon. Board members are elected by
registered voters to serve four-year terms.
Corbett’s school board members include: Board Chair Michelle Vo, who has served
since October 2015; Vice Chair Todd Mickalson, who has served since July 2009; Bob
Buttke, who has served since July 1999; Katey Rickert-Kinnear, who has served since
July 2015; Todd Redfern, who has served since July 2019; Rebecca Bratton who has
served since August 2020 and David Granberg, who has served since July 2021.
The school board’s main goal is to support student achievement. We will be honoring
our school board of directors at the January 18 regular board meeting in the MPB/Board
Room. Thanks for helping us recognize their hardworking volunteer dedication.
Board meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. on the third Wednesday of the month, unless
otherwise scheduled. Visit the school district’s website
https://meetings.boardbook.org/Public/Organization/1554 for information on how
to attend virtually.
Project Giving Tree and Canned Food Drive
One Corbett December tradition is our annual Canned Food Drive and The Giving Tree Project. Becky Young and her students organize and advertise the annual canned food drive at the grade school. This year, we were able to support over eight local families with the donations received. In addition, Melissa Davis organizes Project Giving Tree. During the month of December we have a bulletin board in the grade school foyer that has tags of wants and needs to support local families. Items are collected and then distributed to help support families during the holiday season. This year four families received support from our school staff and community. In addition to this, Corbett Fire Department and Helping Hands of the Columbia Gorge each sponsored two additional families and ensured that all had a bright holiday with plenty of gifts and food.
The Oregon Department of Education, in partnership with the Oregon Lottery, is pleased to announce the continuation of Oregon Regional Teacher of the Year to honor exemplary educators in every region of the state!
• Nominations are open statewide through February 28, 2023.
• Teachers will submit their applications by March 31, 2023.
• Oregon Education Service Districts will select a winner from their region. • Regional Teachers of the Year will be honored across the state in September 2023!
• In October 2023 one of the Regional Teachers of the Year will be named the 2023-24 Oregon Teacher of the Year and will be eligible to apply for the honor of the National Teacher of the Year!
Regional Teachers of the Year will receive a cash prize of $1,000 and will be celebrated across the state. The 2023-24 Oregon Teacher of the Year will receive a $10,000 cash prize (with a matching $5,000 going to their school) and serve as a spokesperson and representative for all Oregon teachers.
Anyone can nominate a teacher! All Oregonians are encouraged to nominate their favorite teacher today at: oregonteacheroftheyear.org

Winter Music Program
On Wednesday, December 14 Corbett Grade School held their K-5 Winter music program. The grade school students sang to a PACKED house in the MPB. A couple of favorite songs sung were Blackbird and Old North Pole (to the tune of Old Town Road)! The young performers were very brave to stand up and sing in front of such a large crowd. It was nice to get back to some of our school community traditions and we had a lot of positive feedback from our families!

Student Thumbprint Art
Middle School News
We Don’t Need Stockings, But We’ll Take Your Winter Caps!
For the second trimester, our 3D-art enrichment class continued the tradition of combining plastic cap art with geography studies. Each student worked with a partner, choosing the flag of a different nation to recreate. They did a quick study of the nation and presented their caps flag, along with some fun facts, at morning meeting. We’ll do one more rotation during spring trimester, so we still need your old plastic caps. For some reason, yellows and blues are really rare, which is ironic, because the nations of the world seem to love those colors on their flags! Collections of plastic caps can be dropped off at the middle school office, or sent with your student to Mr. Houck’s room. Thanks!

Corbett Education Foundation 2022 – 2023 Student Ambassador
Tatumn Hills is Student Ambassador for CEF this year. She moved to Corbett just after turning eight and attended Corbett schools since the second grade. Her favorite classes are creative writing and art. This year she is especially happy helping Mr. Estes in the woodshop. Tatumn enjoys painting and making collages in her free time, as well as biking, baking, and being around animals. Tatumn’s favorite thing to do in Corbett is look at the city lights at night from one of the many viewpoints. She also likes to sled when it’s snowy enough.
Tatumn is excited for the opportunity to work with CEF and is glad she can help her senior class prepare for their future. Tatumn is a member of Leadership and Key Club. Additionally, she played goalie for the high school girls’ soccer team, up until a recent injury, but hopes to get back on the field soon. Tatumn hopes to be a friendly face that the student body can look to for guidance and to keep the seniors on track as they apply for their scholarships.
Welcome, Tatumn! We are happy to have you help us.

Corbett PTA News
HAPPY NEW YEAR!!
Thank you to all that helped with the Book Fair. It was a wonderful success. The PTA was able to give the Grade School and Middle School teachers $200 plus in classroom books. The students had a great time shopping!
When: Second Saturday of every month rain or shine (but not in the snow or ice) Next Saturday is December 10th.
Time: 9 am – 11 am (with enough volunteers and regular upkeep it should not take much time to keep it looking good).
Cost: only your time and any landscape tools you might have to help with the clean ups (i.e., rakes, blower, etc.).
How can I get involved? Please contact Amy Mowlds, VP of the PTA and mom of a Corbett Grade School student if you are interested in helping amy.skibbe@gmail.com or text at 503.970.7328.
Kids of a responsible age are welcome to come along and help. This is a lot of hand work and little hands can be great at pulling weeds. This will not only show our children our appreciation but show them what we can accomplish when we work as a team to better our Community.
- We will be having our January general meeting Thursday, January 12th at 6:30pm via Zoom.
- Please keep scanning those Box Tops! Support the Corbett PTA when you shop at: smile.amazon.com and select "Corbett Elem PTA". Every little bit helps and the PTA loves giving back to our schools and teachers!
