We Are Called
Oct. 15, 2021
From Mrs. Rhodes
Monsignor Mullen often talked about being in the world but not of the world often. It is related to John 17:14-16 that say: 14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world. 15 I am not asking you to take them out of the world, but I ask you to protect them from the evil one.[a] 16 They do not belong to the world, just as I do not belong to the world.
It is that time of year when we have to be intentional about our faith with our families. It seems secular things often come before faith. I would encourage families to spend the couple of weeks leading up to Halloween watching Saint videos on Formed.org or reading about them. There is a lot of information out there about Catholics celebrating Halloween and if it is ok - I encourage you to do research.
Planning ahead for the Halloween costume parade on Friday, Oct. 29 (weather permitting), the details are as follows: The students will get their costumes on at 2:00 - this will be done in the classroom without changing out of their clothes. After the parties end at 3, we will start with kindergarten and go in grade order to the courtyard exiting the middle school doors. After all the grades are outside, starting again with kindergarten, they will parade through the other students (and parents) for regular dismissal. If you are planning on attending, please try to park in your normal spots so the teachers can find you.
It will be a free dress day but students won't be able to be in costume all day. They need to be able to quickly add to their free dress for their costume. I understand that this may mean some modifications such as no make-up, etc. but the students will get to enjoy each other's complete costumes at Trunk or Treat and Halloween. Please NO scary, gory, bloody costumes or weapons for the parade.
Finally, remember only those that signed up to help will be able to be in school for the parties.

There are zero covid cases and quarantines for the 5th week in a row!
Please continue working to keep our school safe and healthy by keeping sick kids home and taking advantage of the rapid screening at school if exposed. As flu season is coming, keep washing hands, eating healthy, drinking water (send refillable bottles to school) and getting enough sleep - the little things go a long way and are very important.
We have over the counter (OTC) medications such as ibuprofen (liquid and tablets), acetaminophen (liquid and tablets), oral antihistamine (liquid), TUMS chewables, triple antibiotic ointment and hydrocortisone 1% cream. All other OTC medications will need to be given before or after school. If there are extenuating circumstances about an OTC medication needing to be given while at school that I don’t have, please contact me first to discuss before sending anything with your child. If your child needs to be given a prescription medication at school daily or as needed, I MUST have a labeled medicine bottle or box with the child’s name, the medication, the dose and the time it is to be given. I will not administer an unlabeled prescription medication to a student under any circumstance. Additionally, please email attendance@shoj.org or mary.hungerford@shoj.org if your child (ren) will be tardy (let us know about ordering a lunch), absent or leaving early.
Please let me know if there is anything I can do to help or if you have questions.

Help the Counselor
Hi Sacred Heart parents and families!
The counseling department is looking for parent, grandparent, high school volunteers to help with building wide programs such as Peace week (our anti-bullying celebration held in November), the Kindness Kansas Citian contest and reception held in the spring, and developing a student council/leadership team for upper elementary and middle school students. If you are feeling called to actively support our Sacred Heart school community in any of these ways, please contact me. I look forward to collaborating with you about how we can help our students grow in great Christian character and build the kingdom of Heaven.
Please contact Lori Schierts, SHOJ counselor

Gratefully and with great hope in our youth,
