ACTION ITEMS

Demographer Study Contract Watch

Larry Mayfield, Executive Director of Business & Finance

The Board approved the contract to hire Davis Demographics to conduct a demographic study of the District’s service area to better understand student population growth and decline in the District. Staff hopes to have a final data report from Davis in May or June 2020.

Security Vestibules and Egress Gates Watch

Mark Helm, Assistant Superintendent
Greg Thompson, Director of Maintenance & Operations

Based on community engagement conversations around the security of our schools, the Board gave direction to seek bids to improve the security measures of our schools. Included in that were fencing and the creation of interior vestibules similar to Lincoln, Washington, and Castlerock ECLC We secured an architect and put together a plan including a bid for fencing which has already been approved, and two more bids, one for concrete work and one for more general construction including egress gates for the fences an interior vestibules.

The administration recommended modifying the main entrances vestibule plan, due to the bid prices coming in so high, by removing the entryway vestibule and replacing it with an electronic door system (similar to Lincoln and Washington). Due to the significant decrease in the scope of work, District personnel can complete this project internally and would not need to go out for bid. Projects would start in the summer of 2020 and be completed by the summer of 2021. The board approved the resolution to reject the bids.

Concrete Bid Watch

Mark Helm, Assistant Superintendent

Greg Thompson, Director of Maintenance & Operations

Sealed bids were received by Wenatchee School District for the Security Concrete work associated with the district-wide Security Upgrades projects. The project includes demo, site prep, and placement of concrete walkways and curbing at Mission View Elementary, Columbia Elementary, Pioneer Middle School and Foothills Middle School. There were seven responsive bidders and one nonresponsive bidder with bids ranging from $93,289 to a high of $200,000. The four lowest bidders had a 4.5% total spread. All bids fell within the architect’s estimated cost of $202,800.00. KP2, LLC (DBA) Pennington Construction of Wenatchee was the low bidder. The board approved the AIA contract and architect recommendation.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION

Go Baby Go Watch

GBG _ WSD Board meeting 2_11_20.pdf

Wenatchee High School Engineering Science teacher Doug Merrill and Advanced AutoCAD students Niko Omlin and Rhett Goveia shared an overview of their Go Baby Go (GBG) program which customizes ride-on cars for children with mobility challenges. The program has been equipping cars in concert with the WSD Special Education Department at a rate of one per semester for the last two years. Mr. Merrill highlighted that they have helped spread the GBG program to schools around the region including Eastmont and are working in partnership with the North Central Educational District’s cohort of physical therapists. In addition, Mr. Merrill serves as the president-elect for the Association of Career and Technical Education and will be presenting the GBG program at a conference in Tahoe, NV. He is working with Wenatchee Kiwanis and the Key Club to help raise funds and partner with their club counterparts in Tahoe to expand the program to that community.

Mr. Barron attended Jazz Week which celebrated their 20th anniversary. Mr. Barron recognized the incredible performances of middle school and high school who participated.

SUPERINTENDENT REPORT Watch

Values:
Dr. Sandberg made some suggested edits to the draft of the Board value statements that the staff presented to the board for consideration. The Board discussed the values and asked that the definition of ‘equity’ be changed to "Ensuring that all students have opportunities, access, and support to fully engage and succeed in rigorous learning. Honoring our differences, rich diversity and creating an inclusive culture that supports all individuals in reaching their full potential"
