Pierce Downer This Week
December 9, 2022
Pierce Downer Families-
I would like to give a special SHOUTOUT to the Downers Grove North Choir for visiting Pierce Downer School! It is nice to offer these fun opportunities and our PD students did a GREAT job having their first ALL school assembly.
Report Cards were sent home today and should help provide insight into how your child is currently performing. If you did not receive the report card home, please reach out to your child's classroom teacher.
We will begin our Winter Break countdown on Monday, December 12th with Holiday Sweater Day. Please see the picture below for the entire week of activities!
Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns via email at LWagner@DG58.org or call 630-719-5860.
We are PD!

December Focus is about Making Good Choices!
A great way to help students understand and see decision making in action is through reading books and analyzing characters! Character analysis and understanding character traits is something that is taught and practiced in the classroom. It is very easy to weave decision making discussions into these lessons and any book that you read together. Analyze both the good and the bad decision making that you come across in books as both serve as a teaching and learning point.
PD Cup SPOTLIGHT
WE are lucky to have Ms. Elford, thank you for all that you do!
Science Fair in Downers Grove Grade School District 58
Downers Grove Grade School District 58 invites students in grades 1-6 to participate in the Science Fair this winter! Registration will be open Friday, Dec. 2 through Friday, Dec. 16. To register for this year’s Science Fair, use this Registration Form. Please note that in order to register, you must know the District 58 username for each student. Usernames can be found in the PowerSchool Parent Portal.
The Science Fair will occur Saturday, Jan. 21 from 8-11 a.m. at O’Neill Middle School. The fair is open to all District 58 students in grades 1-6. The Science Fair is a voluntary experience, but District 58 encourages every student to consider participating!
Students may register as an individual or with one partner. If the partners are in two different grade levels, they must follow the rules of the older grade level.
Please note, the Science Fair registration form is to be completed by ONE adult per project. If this is a partner project, please select one adult to register for each project. You will have the opportunity to list two separate contact emails on this form to accommodate projects with multiple families receiving any future communications.
Please see the below links for the Science Fair schedule, project topic ideas, grade-specific project instructions, judging requirements and more. All projects will comprise an exhibit, written report and oral report. Participants in grades 1-2 will be judged non-competitively and will all receive a participation ribbon. Students in grades 3-6 may choose to participate competitively or non-competitively.

Project Ideas & Requirements (Grades 3-6)
A team of two judges will objectively rate the Science Fair's competitive entries on their knowledge of topic, written report and exhibit. First, second and third place ribbons will be awarded.
Parents and guardians are encouraged to support their children and ensure they follow instructions correctly. However, the Science Fair is an independent project, and children are expected to complete all manipulations and measurements for their experiments, and to create all drawings and charts for their boards, without parent help.
District 58 seeks judges to evaluate Science Fair projects! Each Science Fair project is judged by a two-person team: one “technical” judge with a strong science background and one educator judge. Please click here to sign up to be a Science Fair judge.
Monday and Friday Spirit Days All Year Long!
Safe2Help Illinois
District 58 has partnered with Safe2Help to give students a safe and confidential way to report potential threats or crises. Safe2Help was launched by the State of Illinois in December 2020 and aims to help prevent suicide, bullying, school violence and other threats to school safety.
With Safe2Help, students can connect with a trained crisis professional during their own crisis, or to report a potential threat. Students can submit a Safe2Help alert via the following ways:
- Website: https://app.safe22helpil.com
- Text: SAFE2 (72332)
- Phone: 844-4-SAFEIL (844-472-3345)
- App: "Safe2Help Illinois" app available in the Apple App Store and Google Play Store
- Email: HELP@Safe2HelpIL.com
All alerts are responded to by a trained Safe2Help crisis professional. Safe2Help is available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
District 58 staff are not the initial responders to the alert and will receive each alert after the Safe2Help professional provides support. District 58 staff will review alerts sent by Safe2Help during regular school hours, unless the nature of the alert necessitates immediate school action.
