January 2024
Happy New Year!
We are excited to announce that we will be adding two new schools to our program in January 2024! We will be working with Creekside and Suttons Bay. We have been working behind the scenes with these schools to develop programming that works for them. Look out for an update in the next newsletter.
January's Harvest of the Month is parsnips! They are a root vegetable similar to carrots, but are white in color. Click the image for more information on parsnips, including two recipes.
December Recap
Buckley
In Farm to School, 2nd grade learned about seeds and how they travel. They enjoyed a snack mix of various seeds (coconut, strawberries, and popcorn). The 4th grade students learned about hot crops versus cold crops. With this lesson, they enjoyed Green Grinch Smoothies.
For the nutrition lessons, 1st grade learned about different food groups and enjoyed a snack of Sticks, Stones, Bricks, and Wheels. The 3rd and 5th graders learned how to understand nutrition labels. For their tasting, we made Cherry Berry Chia Jam on an English muffin. This month’s cafeteria taste test was honey-roasted carrots.

Courtade
This month, 1st and 3rd graders learned about eating the rainbow and including a variety of foods in their diet to benefit their bodies. These students enjoyed Green Grinch Smoothies with frozen kale from their school garden! The 4th and 5th graders learned about hot crops versus cold crops. They made massaged kale Caesar salads.
For a taste test we made honey-roasted carrots. We had a bonus tasting of sunchokes (see photo), also known as Jerusalem artichokes or sunroots. Sunchokes are a root vegetable that are similar in appearance to ginger. They are crunchy with a somewhat nutty mild flavor. When cooked, they are similar to potatoes.
