​Dear Eagle Ridge Academy Community,

The tERAbytes (#6749), Eagle Ridge Academy's Varsity Robotics Team, competed in the FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC), Minneapolis' regional competition, last Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, April 7-9, at 3M Arena at Mariucci. In a shocking turn of events, the small team - comprised of just eleven students and four mentors - came back from being ranked #49 out of 53 teams to defending their state championship! They have advanced to the world championship, which will be held in Houston, Texas, next week, April 20-23.

The tERAbytes lost their first four matches of the regional competition. During each match, their robot had two major goals: throwing balls into a basket and climbing a series of rungs, both of which earned points for the team. When not competing, the team had to network with each of the other 52 teams at the competition to find out what skills their robots had in order to find the best match to team up with for the final competition. The tERAbytes programed their robot to auto-climb with repeatability, a highly coveted skill, as climbing earns the maximum amount of points for a team.

The tERAbytes then went on to win the next five matches in a row, moving their position up to #24. In the last qualification round, another robot knocked theirs off the bar as it was climbing the top rung. The robot hit the ground hard, breaking the shooter, misaligning the frame, cracking the plexiglass, and more. With less than an hour to fix the robot, several teams came together to help the tERAbytes piece the robot back together with band-aids and duct tape. While team members were fixing the robot, the driver coach went to the Final Selection Process, where the #3 ranked team chose the tERAbytes to join them in the semi-finals based on their robot's climbing skills!

The tERAbytes then proceeded to win enough matches to make it to the final round, where things went perfectly between the three robots on their alliance. The tERAbytes managed to defend their state championship title, an especially impressive feat as all of the students except two on the team this year are completely new to the program!

Congratulations to students Arjan E. (grade 10), Ben M. (grade 10), Clara S. (grade 9), Matthew K. (grade 11), Zachary H. (grade 10), Jack D. (grade 10), Sophia B. (grade 9), Evan N. (grade 12), Ella A. (grade 9), Gabe G. (grade 10), Owen H. (grade 10), their mentors Mark O., Steven H., Carter O., Spencer M., and Advisor Derek Lutz on advancing to the world competition!

Last year, the world championship was canceled due to COVID, so this is the team's first chance to attend. The world championship is only one week away and the team needs donations to help cover registration fees, travel, and lodging expenses. To celebrate their accomplishment, all Eagle Ridge Academy teachers and students in grades K-12 gathered outside of classrooms at the start of the day on Wednesday, April 13 to cheer for The tERAbytes as they paraded through the school with their winning robot.

The 2022 Board Candidate Forum will be held in person in the Eagle Ridge Academy Forum on Thursday, April 21, at 6:00 p.m. The Board Candidate Forum will also be livestreamed via Zoom and recorded for those who are unable to attend in person, though all nominees must attend the Board Candidate Forum in person. The Zoom meeting facilitators will be utilizing a Google Form to take audience questions to be asked of the candidates in the live meeting. 1. The role of the Board is strategic in nature, while the role of the Administration is more operational. Given that, how would you ensure the Board stays focused on strategic issues and opportunities while empowering the Administration to handle the day-to-day operations of the Academy? Transportation planning for 2022-23 has begun. Eagle Ridge Academy is happy to announce there will be no increase in transportation fees for the 2022-23 school year. In order to build the best routes, formally communicate the routes, receive feedback from families, and finalize the published routes, we need your timely participation.

The Academy offers a hub transportation system with centrally located stops within communities and does not guarantee a stop within walking distance of your residence. If you wish to be included in the routing for the 2022-23 school year and are not currently using Academy-provided transportation, please complete a Change in Transportation form by April 15, 2022. We also ask that you complete the form if you wish to discontinue using Academy-provided transportation for the 2022-23 school year. If there will be no change to your transportation, no action is required.

Dear Families,

Eagle Ridge Academy has a five-year curriculum review cycle that is conducted on a rotating basis for each subject area. This past year, grades K-5 English Language Arts has been under review. A team of teachers, staff, and administrators was established to analyze the strengths and weaknesses of the current program and review other programs that may address identified deficiencies. Below is a summary of the actions taken so far and the next steps in the review process.

1. Ten programs were reviewed at a high level to evaluate their alignment to Classical Education, Core Knowledge Sequence, and best practices in literacy instruction.

2. Two programs were evaluated using a rubric that measures the program against best practices in developing student listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

3. The group recommended Amplify Core Knowledge Language Arts (CKLA) as the program to adopt for the 2022-23 school year.

4. This recommendation is being presented to the Curriculum, Instruction, Student Achievement (CISA) workgroup on April 14 and will be presented to the Board of Directors before the end of the school year.

Amplify CKLA is a grades K-5 program that aligns with the Core Knowledge sequence and will allow for a continuity of instruction. It provides embedded assessments to reduce the amount of testing and is content rich and rigorous, which provides all students the opportunity attain their highest potential.

On behalf of the students of Eagle Ridge Academy, THANK YOU for the donations of books to our school library in honor of National Reading Month in March. Close to 300 new or gently used books are being added to the shelves! We now have more copies of popular series, can replace well-loved books, and are able to add several exciting new titles. The students are thrilled! Thank you for your generosity.

Congratulations to fourth grader Anika M. for winning the ERA Aquarium Club's T-shirt Design Contest! Anika's design was chosen from 178 contest entries. Aquarium Club's leaders surprised her in Ms. Oie's class with balloons and a $20 Amazon gift card.

CIPHER (Citizenship, Integrity, Perseverance, Honor, Excellence, Respect) is more than a motto -- it’s what we strive to follow in our actions with our fellow Gryphons.

The Schools of Logic & Rhetoric hold monthly Pillar Assemblies, at which six students from each of the Upper School grades are recognized for displaying CIPHER throughout the month. Each student is nominated for a Pillar Award by one of their teachers, who writes a short paragraph describing how the student exemplified their pillar, which is shared the student body.

Congratulations to our March Pillar Award recipients! Thank you for demonstrating CIPHER every day and for being role models at Eagle Ridge Academy.

St. Catherine University Summer Fashion Program

This summer, St. Catherine University invites high school students to explore the world of fashion from design principles to merchandising techniques at its St. Paul campus. Participants will discover career tracks in the fashion industry and leave with portfolio essentials. The five-day Summer Fashion Workshop is open to students in grades 10-12 who identify as women, nonbinary, or genderqueer and will take place July 11-15, 1:00-5:00 p.m.,

Each afternoon has two 90-minute instruction and activity sessions that will take place on campus grounds, in our fashion labs, or at exhibit spaces. Activities include sketching fashion figures, sewing to upcycle a design, devising merchandising strategies, creating collage drawings, making a trend board, styling a model & assembling a photoshoot, and much more! The program costs $300. A reduced cost of $50 is available for families who qualify for free/reduced price lunch. The ERA Booster Club is busy planning another fun event! The 2nd Annual ERA Activities & Athletics Awards Celebration will take place at Eagle Ridge Academy in the evening of Sunday, May 22. Watch for your invitation in the mail.

The first Track & Field meet of the season took place at the International School of Minnesota on Tuesday, April 5, with nine teams competing. We are so proud of our over 100 Track & Field athletes for putting their all into the first meet, in spite of the rain and cold. Thank you to this year's incredible coaches, including the ones pictured here, for their time, energy, dedication, and optimism! We can't wait to see our athletes continue to improve this season.

We are excited to announce that the annual golf tournament will be hosted at Edinburgh USA in Brooklyn Park for the first time! The event will take place on Tuesday, June 21. Edinburgh USA is a public course and is one of only two courses in Minnesota designed by world renowned architect Robert Trent Jones II, who also designed Chambers Bay, site of the 2015 U.S. Open. Prizes this year are from the Edinburgh Pro Shop. All golfers will receive an Edinburgh golf hat (pictured below)!

The annual golf scramble is a fun event that brings people together for a day to benefit the students of Eagle Ridge Academy. The event includes 18 holes of golf, cart and green fees, lunch and social hour by D’Amico Catering, raffle, complimentary drink ticket, and golfer gift.

Last year, proceeds supported the Playscape and Grounds Beautification Project at Eagle Ridge Academy, bringing outdoor learning and enhanced play to our students. This year, proceeds will support a new Grow Your Own Teacher Program at Eagle Ridge Academy.

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week May 2-6

Help our PTO shower Eagle Ridge Academy teachers with love and appreciation during Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week! Here’s how:

• Parent donations will be used to treat teachers and staff to special gifts during the week of May 2!
• Order gifts or gift cards for teachers and staff off of the Amazon wish list! Drop off or mail the gifts to the main office with a note for PTO.
• Donate gift cards! The PTO will accept $5-$20 gift cards for anything you think teachers and staff would appreciate. Drop them off or mail them into the main office.

Grades K-8 Invited to Disney/Marvel-Themed School Skate Night on May 19

The PTO is excited to bring back their grades K-8 school skate! Join them at Skateville (201 River Ridge Cir. S, Burnsville, MN 55337) on Thursday, May 19, 5:30-7:30 p.m. for skating, games, prizes, and music! Roller skate rental is $6/person, inline skate rental is $3/person. Children MUST be accompanied by adults. It is not a drop-off event. Come dressed in your favorite Disney or Marvel costume and you might win a prize for best-dressed!

We appreciate the family contributions to the PTO fund that have brought us halfway to our goal for the year. You can always make a donation online or mail a check to PTO at the school's address. The donations go toward building community and providing fun events for the children to enhance their school experience.

Since our school is unable to publish or otherwise share family contact information, we want to encourage families to share their contact information in the school directory via Membership Tool Kit. Doing so makes it much easier to communicate between families, share classroom opportunities, publicize grade level get-togethers, and assist one another with homework and uniform questions.

Last quarter in Ms. Kruschke's Lower School art class, students learned about various artworks from different Native American tribes, such as Dine’ (Navaho) Saddle Blanket, Plains Buffalo Robe, Kopi Kachina Doll, and Mesquakie Bear Claw Necklace. They then discussed how these works of art are functional and considered crafts. These discussions led to the art students creating a radial design weaving as part of a large group assemblage.

Our Lower School Gryphons enjoyed playing Mario Kart in real life in physical education before break. Thank you to Coach Kenny for finding exciting and unique ways to get our students moving!
