AZVA Bobcat Bulletin
May 2020
Head of School Message
As this school year comes to a close, we understand many of our families and staff are still grabbling with the new 'normal' required by this unprecedented situation. As is the case with many schools across the country, our schools have faced closures of our district office, blended locations, cancelled events and more. In the end, the main focus of our teachers and staff is our students, and their success academically. We sincerely thank all of our students for their continued efforts to finish this school year strong. We look forward to wrapping up this school year as we celebrate the culminating success of our high school graduates as we celebrate with them in virtual graduation ceremonies.
Our next school year may look different, but we are continuing our plans to make it our best year ever! We have many exciting plans under way including varsity letters for students participating in our Esports team and service learning program, a student school announcement program, continued community events, and more!
We thank you for making us your school of choice and hope you have the opportunity to save your spot for next school year by completing the re-registration process.
Sincerely,
Dr. Kelly Van Sande

Spirit Week starts next week (May 4th - May 8th)_ Post your pictures to our (private) FaceBook groups or email to daoshiro@k12.com to post them for you. You can also email them and ask her to NOT share them to social media but instead only share them with teachers and staff.
See below for all the details but here is a quick run down on each day: Monday (Star Wars Day, May the 4th be with you), Tuesday (Cinco De Mayo Day), Wednesday (Pet Partners/Stuffed Animals), Thursday (Villain vs. Superhero day), Friday (Teacher Appreciation day).
This Month in History: May
May derives its name from the Greek goddess Maia, whose name meant “The great one.” To the Ancient Greeks and Romans, she was the goddess of spring and growing plants. It is also associated with the Latin word “mairoes,” which means “elders,” as the Romans celebrated elders during this month.
- May 1, 1707 – England and Scotland united and became known as Great Britain. Today Great Britain is officially called the United Kingdom, and includes England, Scotland, and North Ireland.
- May 5th, 1862 – In Mexico and the U.S., this date is celebrated as Cinco de Mayo, a holiday that marks the victory of Mexican troops over invading French soldiers in the Battle of Puebla.
- May 7, 1992 - The 27th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, banning Congress from giving itself a pay raise. This is the newest amendment to be added to the U.S. Constitution.
- May 8, 1942 - During World War II, the Battle of Coral Sea began. This battle was fought between U.S. and Japanese forces in the Pacific Ocean. It marked Japan’s first defeat in the war, the first time in history that two navies fought a battle entirely with aircraft, and the first naval battle in which the opposing ships (aircraft carriers) never saw each other.
- May 9th – Celebrated as Victory Day in Russia, a national holiday that marks the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II (known as the "Great Patriotic War" in Russia). This holiday also honors the millions of Russians who died in the war- an estimated 20 million people.
- May 17, 1954 – In Brown v. Board of Education, the U.S. Supreme Court declared that it was unconstitutional for states to establish separate public schools based on race, banning racial segregation in American public schools.
- May 18, 1980 – The Mount St. Helens volcano erupted in southwestern Washington State, sending ash and steam over 10 miles into the air. Prior to this, the volcano had not been active since 1857.
- May 21, 1881 - The American Red Cross was founded by nurse and teacher Clara Barton, providing aid to refugees, wounded soldiers, prisoners of war, and victims of natural disasters.
