October 2022
From the Desk of the Principals
The crisp evenings and darker mornings signal that fall is here! Although we wish we could spend the daydreaming of pumpkin spice lattes, the school has been bustling. Here are just some of the things we have been up to:
- Homecoming week which included door/ hallway decorating, parade, coronation, and lots of fun!
- Many students completed assessments to help us best support academic needs in our MTSS process.
- All staff members who work with K-3 have been completed a Foundations of Reading training so we can all utilize the science of reading to implement best teaching practices.
- Volleyball, football, basketball, robotics, lego league and cross-country practices are up and running.
Students and Staff have been kept busy in and out of our building which has led to a LOT of opportunities for substitute teachers to work. We LOVE our current substitute teachers and we would LOVE for more of you to join! We have been short on subs a few times this year and would be grateful for anyone who may consider getting their substitute teaching license. The process is not complicated and it gives you freedom to pick up as many or as few openings as you desire.
From the Desk of Mrs. Quinn
October. I can’t believe it’s here already! A hearty “Thank You” to anyone who donated to a Wilton student or to the community link during our September Book Blast. The books earned by students will be delivered in October. It is because of your support that every student in grades PreK-8 will receive at least one book!
Just as the seasons follow a predictable sequence, so too does the school. In the library, the beginning of the second quarter marks the beginning of the 2nd Annual Reading Incentive! It will continue to follow the ocean theme in the library via the use of Treasure Maps.
The reading incentive will be school-wide, Preschool through 12th grade. Each student may grab a Treasure Map. For the youngest students, the map will require them to read a certain number of books. For the older students, the Treasure Map will require reading different genres of books. Each time a student finishes one book, they may mark it off on their map, bring the map to the library and receive a prize. When the whole map is completed, the students bring the map to the library, receive a final prize, and their name goes in the chest for the GRAND PRIZE drawing! Students may complete the Treasure Map as often as they like throughout 2nd Quarter.
The more maps they complete, the more times their name goes in the chest for the GRAND PRIZE drawing. However, only one student’s name will be drawn as the winner of the GRAND PRIZE.
All variations of reading will “count” for this incentive. Reading to a family member, having someone else read the book to you, listening to an audiobook, or plain old reading a book in your hands will all count as reading a book. Sorry, for this incentive magazines and newspaper articles will NOT count. The students have multiple sources for reading: our own school library, requesting books from the State Library, the Bookmobile, our online library (Library2Go), any audiobook subscriptions students/parents might have, and now the books earned through September’s Book Blast. Those books should arrive just in time to go towards the Treasure Map reading incentive.
Please encourage your child to participate in this year’s 2nd Annual Reading Incentive. I believe when students read, it allows them to escape the daily grind of their own life. They have the chance to see themselves in book characters and see how to handle various situations. Sometimes they meet their hero; not necessarily a specific person, but more like them recognizing attributes of a character that they deem “heroic”. Other times students meet characters not at all like themselves. Tolerance and empathy can be learned through these characters. In short, reading is good for everyone! I look forward to giving away many prizes throughout 2nd Quarter. Watch for more information to come beginning October 13.
Happy Halloween!
