January 2023
The Principal's Den
As we usher in the new year, I extend a warm welcome back from the winter break to our incredible school community. I hope this time offered moments of joy, relaxation, and cherished memories with loved ones.
January marks a fresh start—a moment for reflection and goal setting. It’s a time for our students to aspire, set targets, and embrace the opportunities ahead. We encourage both academic and personal goal setting, empowering our students to aim high, knowing that each step forward is progress.
We encourage a growth mindset among our students, instilling the belief that dedication, effort, and resilience lead to success. By cultivating this mindset, we aim to equip our students with the skills and determination needed to overcome challenges and achieve their dreams.
Together, as a collaborative team of educators, parents, and students, we can create an environment where each child feels supported and motivated to reach their full potential.
Let’s embark on this new year with enthusiasm, determination, and a commitment to excellence.
Please take a few minutes to read about all the upcoming events at WBM. There are lots of ways for you and your student to get involved and be part of our school community. We can't do it without you!
Thanks so much!
Dr. Beth Pallister
Principal
Attention Rising 9th Grade Students
Winter Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA)
Reading and Math Growth Assessments (VGA) will take place at WBM Tuesday, January 9 and Wednesday, January 10. Middle school students taking Algebra or Geometry will not take math VGA. Students eligible for the Virginia Alternate Assessment Program (VAAP) do not participate in the reading or math VGA. The VGA are computer adaptive tests, shorter than the Standards of Learning tests, that are customized for every student. How a student responds to questions determines the difficulty of the next question. Correct responses lead to more difficult test questions, while incorrect responses result in the selection of less difficult items for the student.
The computer adaptive test (CAT) algorithm has been configured so that the student might be administered some items from below or above the current grade level depending on the student’s responses to the on-grade-level content items. Parents and caregivers are a critical part of a child’s successful learning experiences. Reading with students and talking about what is being read is important to the development of strong readers. Talking about and doing math within the family is a great way to engage students and encourage success. Online Resources are available through the VDOE to help students and parents prepare and understand these Reading and Math assessments.
Access codes for fall Virginia Growth Assessments (VGA) will be provided to parents in the ParentVUE documents folder. Your child’s fall VGA performance reports will be posted within 10 school days of test completion.
It is expected that your child will bring their fully-charged Chromebook to school on testing days. Please note that cell phones, personal electronic devices, and other unauthorized materials are not permitted during testing.

WATCH D.O.G.S (Dads of Great Students)
WATCH D.O.G.S.® (Dads Of Great Students) is a family and community engagement educational initiative. WATCH D.O.G.S.® are fathers, grandfathers, uncles, and other father-figures who volunteer in the school and work with our students and teachers in a variety of ways (watching hallways, assisting in the cafeteria, interacting with students in classrooms). This program benefits our school as students gain positive male role models, the schools gain an extra set of eyes, ears, and hands, and the WATCH D.O.G.S.® gain a greater awareness of the challenges students face these days. Many schools report that the mere presence of a WATCH D.O.G® reduces reports of bullying.
We welcome volunteer time in any increment, and we would work with you to identify the ways in which you feel comfortable volunteering. See additional information about WATCH D.O.G.S.® here.
If you are interested in, or would like more information about, volunteering as a WATCH D.O.G®, please complete this no-obligation form.
Thank you for considering helping in this way.

We have a new Military and Family Life Counselor!
Starting tomorrow our Military Family Liason counselor will start holding her lunch bunches
Please help us welcome our new MFLC! She provides and invaluable service to our military connected families!
My name is Jocelyn Hawkins, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor and the Military & Family Life Counselor at Western Branch Middle School. In my role, I work to support and strengthen the capacity of staff, families, programs, and systems to meet the needs of military children, adolescents, and their families.
MFLC’s provide non-medical, short term, situational, problem-solving counseling services to address issues that occur across the military lifestyle. I am here to help service members and their families cope with the normal reactions to the stressful/adverse situations created by deployment, reintegration and other military life challenges. With parental consent, MFLC’s provide support to children and adolescents up to age 18 in both individual and group settings. The service is free and confidential with the exception of the Department of Defense duty to warn and mandated reporting mandates.
For more information about how the MFLC program can support you and your family email Mrs. Hawkins at hawkinsj@MagellanFederal.com or call 757-759-2802.
