Raising Awareness: April is National Autism Awareness Month
National Autism Awareness Month raises awareness for autism and Asperger's syndrome during April.
Autism is a complex brain disorder that often inhibits a person's ability to communicate, respond to surroundings, and form relationships with others.
National Autism Awareness Month began in 1972 as National Autistic Children's Week as an avenue to increase awareness, advocate awareness, and spark change in schools, communities, medical facilities and businesses.
How to observe Autism Awareness Month:
- Host an event supporting autism awareness.
- Attend an event and show support for someone you know.
- Share your story and make your voice heard.
- Speak out about autism to help eliminate the stigma associated with it.
- Use #AutismAwarenessMonth to share on social media.
While the month also celebrates the stories and lives of those with autism, it's important to remember that autism is a lifelong condition with varying degrees of severity. It is important to continue to support research for treatment and therapies that will improve the lives of those with autism.
National child Abuse Prevention Month.
April has been designated as Child Abuse Prevention Month in the United States since 1983. U.S. President Barack Obama continued this tradition and, in 2016, issued a Presidential proclamation stating: "During National Child Abuse Prevention Month, we recommit to giving every child a chance to succeed and to ensure that every child grows up in a safe, stable, and nurturing environment that is free from abuse and neglect."

The Importance of Building and Maintaining Relationships with the Parents of Children with Individualized Education Program
Article written by Disability Services Social Worker, Monica Chavarria
As a Disability Services Social Worker, part of this rewarding role is being able to build relationships with the student’s parents or guardians. Our social workers work diligently in contacting the parent and scheduling an intake to gather background information. In addition to this process, the social worker makes sure we reach out to any of the supportive staff on that student’s campus as this gives us an opportunity to collaborate in finding what resources or services the student is receiving to meet their needs.
Building relationships is a catalyst to maintaining open communication with the parent, school, and student. Open and honest communication allows for the social worker to assess how much of their student’s disability they understand or if they need additional educational resources.
These services can also extend outside of the campus where the social workers will work with points of contact at various community agencies to refer our students to their specialized services. The importance of these relationships allows us to advocate and support these students and their families to make sure the students’ needs are being met. If you are interested in learning more about the support that SAISD Disability Services Social Workers provide, please call 210-354-9565.
