An SIC is a broad-based body intended to advise the principal and school, and is focused on helping to achieve school improvement. The vision of the South Carolina School Improvement Council is, “To promote and support civic engagement for quality public education in SC.” The mission of the SC School Improvement Council is:"To facilitate meaningful parent and community involvement in our state’s public schools by providing resources, tools and strategies to local School Improvement Councils and other stakeholder groups."

Parent, teachers, and community member representatives serve on an SIC, as do the school's administration.

State law requires that every K-12 public school in South Carolina host an SIC.

SIC duties focus primarily on the school improvement process. SICs:

• provide input and feedback during the development of the school's five-year strategic plan and annual updates;

• assist in implementation of school improvement programs and activities;

• monitor and report on progress toward improvement goals in the annual SIC Report to the Parents and with the principal in the narrative to the SC School Report Card;

• provide other assistance as requested by the principal.

This year, our Pontiac School Improvement Council has held two very productive meetings. The turnout from our parents has been wonderful and we are excited about our goals this year. We are currently developing a goal that will focus on supporting a love for reading in students. We are inviting a representative from Richland County Public Library to join us at our next meeting to share ways to involve parents in this initiative. We are also optimistic that we can gain community partnerships that can help provide reading mentors to our students during the school day. We’d love your help! Please consider serving on our SIC.
