A Note from Dr. Hooks
Dear Hyde-Addison ES Families,
Happy Friday! Thank you to all of the families who attended the virtual Summer Bridge Program Information Session, this morning. It is always rejuvenating to see the smiling faces of our students. We look forward to having our families join us for the Differentiated Virtual Family Orientations, on August 14, 2020. Links for each session will be emailed to families, by August 13, 2020.
The Hyde-Addison ES Team is scheduling times for families to pick up instructional materials, for the 2020-2021 school year and items remaining from the spring. Additional information will be provided, when the specific dates and times are finalized. Instructional materials will include applicable reading and math materials, prepared science and music kits, in addition to student supplies, for those in need, as described under News and Updates.
Last week, Mayor Bowser announced that DC Public Schools we will start the 2020-2021 school year with a virtual learning model. This virtual learning model will apply to all students and will proceed through at least the first academic term, August 31, 2020-November 6, 2020.
As shared by DCPS, DCPS leaders and teachers remain unwavering in our dedication to equity and closing opportunity gaps. Therefore, students will be scheduled in ways that promote equity including some grouping based on current academic needs as well as whole group academic opportunities. Due to the complexity of scheduling, DCPS school leaders and staff members will not be able to account for learning pods during the scheduling process, including in group arrangements or schedule times. Additional guidance on learning pods is forthcoming from DCPS.
In an effort to support families in preparing for virtual learning, I have provided a timeline below, with the understanding that the timeline may shift, based on DCPS guidance.
August 10-14, 2020: Class lists will be shared with families.
August 14, 2020: Differentiated Virtual Family Orientations will be held and virtual learning expectations will be shared.
August 24-28, 2020: Instructional materials will be available for pick up, by families.
August 24-28, 2020: Teachers will share small group assignments. These small groups may shift throughout the virtual learning experience, based on instructional needs. Hybrid learning cohort assignments will be shared, prior to DCPS transitioning to a hybrid learning model, if that occurs. Information and engagement opportunities will be provided to families, prior to final placements.
August 24-28, 2020: As shared by DCPS, schools are currently designing school-specific schedules with their students, staff and programming in mind. Student schedules will include live lessons, small group learning, and independent work time. Live synchronous instruction will be supplemented with asynchronous learning opportunities, on-line learning program usage, group work and independent assignments. DCPS families can expect to receive their student’s individual schedule during the week of August 24, 2020. You may review this link, dcpsreopenstrong.com/schedule, shared by Chancellor Ferebee, to see an example of what a virtual learning experience could encompass. Each schedule will be specific to individual school programing needs.
In general, Canvas, our online, common learning management system, will be used by teachers and students to keep learning at home resources in one place. Canvas allows students to see daily and weekly schedules and keep track of assignments. From learning materials to Microsoft Teams live lesson links, everything will be on Canvas, as applicable.
Please keep you and your loved ones safe. Continue to follow the guidance of Mayor Bowser and DC Health. For resources and information about the District of Columbia Government’s coronavirus (COVID-19) response and recovery efforts, please visit coronavirus.dc.gov.
Kindest Regards,
Dr. Calvin Hooks, Principal

NEWS & UPDATES
Supply Lists
While instruction will be all-virtual for the first advisory, that does not mean all student learning will happen in front of a screen! There will be plenty of hands-on activities as well as project-based learning and we want to be sure that every student has the materials they will need readily available at home.
To achieve this, we will not be asking you to donate materials from grade-specific supply lists at this time. Instead, we are sharing general lists of materials that we would like your child to have available at home to support their learning.
To make it easier to purchase any of the materials you may not already have, we are sharing an Amazon Lists with examples of each item listed. It is not necessary for students to have the exact item listed. For example, if you already have extra pocket folders then please don’t feel obliged to purchase more. Additionally, if you have multiple children at home please use your judgement on which materials they are able to share (ie. colored pencils, loose leaf paper) and which materials students need their own set of so they can work at the same time (ie. composition notebooks, personal whiteboards).
We know that the cost of school materials adds up and we are committed to ensuring every child has the supplies they need to learn at home. The PTA is currently fundraising to purchase 50 sets of materials that will be available for families in need to pick up and take home free of charge. Please see their message below for more information about how to help donate towards those funds.
