What is the 2024 Black History Month theme? Since its origins in the 1920s, Black History Month has been assigned a theme. For 2024, the theme is "African Americans and the Arts," according to the Association for the Study of African American Life and History.
“A goal is a dream with a finish line.” ~ Duke Ellington
Considered one of the greatest jazz composers of all time, Duke Ellington had an enormous impact on the popular music of the late 20th century. Among his more than two thousand songs are such hits as “In A Sentimental Mood,” “Sophisticated Lady,” “I Got It Bad And That Ain't Good,” and “I'm Beginning To See The Light.”
His given name is Edward Ellington, but was nicknamed the Duke for his elegant clothes and manners.
Ellington led his orchestra non-stop for 50 years (1924-74). One can pick out any year from that period, whether it is 1927, 1947 or 1967, and his big band ranks with the top five in the world. As a composer, he wrote thousands of pieces, ranging from three-minute classics to hour-long suites.
In 1923 Ellington moved to New York City, at the request of Elmer Snowden, to join his group, The Washingtonians. Four years later, after Snowden left, Ellington and the group began performing at The Cotton Club, the most prominent nightclub in the Harlem area of New York City at the time. Below is a link to one of his musical masterpieces!

Change of Transportation
If your child needs to go home a different way than normal please send a note or email their teacher AND the front office at rachelle.bartlett@richlandone.org. Teachers are not always available to check email during the day (they are teaching your children), so its best to email both! If the person picking up in car rider or walker line is not on your pick up list, it has to be in writing by the parent for them to pick up. Last, but certainly not least, PLEASE do not call a change in after 1:45. End of day is already in motion and we want to make sure your child is in the right location to get home safely. Thank you!
Time to kickoff the 2024 Superintendent's Book Club Challenge! The Smore below contains challenge details and the kickoff videos. Please share the link and flyer with teachers in your buildings.
We are excited to announce that the 2024 Superintendent's Book Club Challenge will kick off on February 12th. This year's challenge will focus on minutes read versus books read and students in grades PreK through 8th grade will track their progress through Beanstack. All librarians and reading coaches have been trained on the software. It is located in ClassLink. We will not provide paper books for students this year. We will provide a flyer for teachers to share with students and the kickoff video from Dr. Witherspoon next week.
Additionally, please mark your calendars. We will kick off the Superintendent's Writing Challenge on March 11th. Additional details will be shared as we approach the date.
