Kindergarten and First Grade Concerts
Thank you to those of you who came to support our Kindergarten and First Grade students at their concerts yesterday! It was amazing to see how excited the students were to share everything they had worked so hard to learn in music class this school year. Students can look forward to a fun end of the year in the music room filled with lots of music makings, songs, and games.
Second Grade
Second grade students have been hard to work practicing different songs and games that we will be sharing at the spring concert on May 23rd. Each class has a special game or dance they will get to share with our audience.
Third Grade
Third grade students have been hard at work on their recorder songs to prepare for their concert on May 23rd. Third grade is a big year in the music room as we learn our first instrument, and I have been so impressed with their hard work in preparing for this performance.
Fourth Grade
Fourth grade students are also working on some recorder songs for their concert on May 30th. We have also been learning all about how to sing in canon, and learning a few new songs to share with you all at the performance!
Fifth Grade
Fifth grade students are working hard on learning the ukulele, so we can share this new skill with you at our May 30th concert. I am so impressed with how quickly the fifth grade is picking up on this new skill.
Music Update: March
Welcome Back to Music!
The last month of March was filled with lots of musical learning - read below to find out what each grade was up to in music last month.
Our Busy Music Room🎶
Kindergarten
In Kindergarten, students have been exploring dynamics - how loud or soft music can be. Kindergartners have been learning how they can make their own loud and soft sounds through many different songs and games.
First Grade
First grade students have been exploring a new rhythm - the quarter rest, or Shh. We have been comparing our three rhythms, and investigating what they have in common, learning they all are one beat. We explored how in music we measure beats to see how long a rhythm is.
Second Grade
Second grade students are starting to learn about a new note or pitch. We are exploring how it sounds lower than the three pitches we already know, Mi So and La, and how this mystery note has the important job of making songs sound finished and complete.
Third Grade
I am so impressed with how quickly third grade students are learning the recorder! We are continuing to work through our recorder books, and soon 3rd graders will be ready for their first playing test, where they can earn different colored belts for mastering a certain skill on the recorder. The first belt is earned for being able to switch between G and B on the recorder.
Fourth Grade
Fourth grade students are learning all about improvisation - or making music that is not planned ahead of time using a few specific guidelines. We are having a lot of fun in class practicing improvising on the recorder to the song C Jam Blues.
Fifth Grade
In Fifth grade, students are learning how to identify and discuss their musical preferences and opinions through our Music March Madness project - I look forward to updating you on the overall winner in my next newsletter.

Music Update: February
Welcome Back to Music!
February has been filled with lots of great learning and music making! Read below to find what each grade has been learning about in music this month!
Our Busy Music Room🎶
Kindergarten
In Kindergarten, students have been continuing to learn the difference between fast and slow music through singing, movement, stories, and games. We have learned the word Tempo means how fast or slow the beat is, and that Presto means music that is fast, and largo means music that is slow. Our favorite activity was “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt”.
First Grade
First grade students have been exploring a new rhythm - something called a sneaky beat. We have discovered that some beats in music have no sound, but that the music continues. This means we have to pay very close attention to make sure those beats of silence do not sneak past us! Next week, we will learn the name of this rhythm.
Second Grade
Second grade students have been reviewing all about bar lines, double bar lines, and repeat signs! We talked about how barlines group beats together, and how to count how many beats our different rhythms are, in order to find exactly where to put our barlines. We have also been learning about a new kind of music that groups beats by 4 instead of 2.
Third Grade
I am so impressed with how quickly third grade students are learning the recorder! Third grade has quickly added B and A to the notes we know, and are working through our recorder books.
Fourth Grade
Fourth grade students continue to work on their recorder skills as we work through songs in our books “Be A Recorder Star”. Classes are working on how to play with different dynamics, and how we can make musical decisions to make our playing more artistic.
Fifth Grade
In Fifth grade, students have been working on exploring form, which helps musicians understand how music is organized. We have been finding the form of songs we know. Students then worked in groups to compose their own percussion pattern using cups as drums, to create a new section of a known song, adding to the form. I was very impressed with the creative patterns the students composed!
Music Update: January
Welcome Back to Music!
2024 is off to a great start in the music room. Students came back ready to learn and be creative musicians!
Our Busy Music Room🎶
Kindergarten
In Kindergarten, students have been starting to explore the difference between fast and slow music through singing, movement, stories, and games. This week, we learned how to play a hand drum, which we used to practice our different kinds of steady beats!
First Grade
First grade students have been very excited to learn all about their first rhythms in music - Ta and Titi! In the next few classes, first graders will focus on reading, writing, composing, and performing these rhythms so they can become Ta and Titi experts.
Second Grade
Second grade students also discovered a new rhythm - the half note, or Ta - a. Students learned that Ta-a is a rhythm that is one sound over two beats, and how to listen closely to find this rhythm in songs. We practiced this by working as a class to identify the rhythm of a known song.
Third Grade
Third grade students have been very excited to be in the music room the last few weeks, as we have started our long anticipated unit on recorders! Students have been amazing with following expectations with their recorders, as we review all of our “Recorder Basics”on how to be excellent musicians and make the best possible music with our instruments. We have learned how to play two notes successfully - G and E!
Fourth Grade
Fourth grade students continue to work on their recorder skills as we work through songs in our books “Be A Recorder Star” - classes are working toward earning “belts”, which demonstrates mastery of a specific skill on the recorder.
Fifth Grade
In Fifth grade, students have been working on five note songs on the recorder - using G A B C D. This requires a lot of technical skills and coordination, as fifth graders have to be able to read the notes, know how to play each of the five notes with the correct fingers, all while playing the recorder! Our fifth grade students are working hard on these combinations of skills as a way to prepare for middle school music next year.
I am so happy with the start to 2024 in the music room!
I look forward to more learning through the rest of the school year!
Music Update: December
Welcome Back to Music!
Welcome back! I hope everyone has been enjoying the busy month of December. We have been preparing for winter break with many different winter themed activities in music class this month.
Our Busy Music Room🎶
Kindergarten
In Kindergarten, students learned about the music of The Nutcracker. We did movement activities to the music of the ballet with scarves, and then watched a short video telling the story of The Nutcracker.
First Grade
First grade students went on a sleigh ride this week! We talked about all of the different sounds you might hear on a sleigh ride and used jingle bells to go with a sleigh ride song.
Second Grade
Second grade students learned a traditional holiday song from Sweden. We enjoyed doing a circle dance that goes along with the song.
Third and Fourth Grade
In third and fourth grade, students participated in a “Snowball Fight”! Students composed their own pattern of notes on the music staff, then other students picked up their “snowball”, and had to play the pattern on a xylophone.
Fifth Grade
Fifth grade students enjoyed watching a contemporary staging of The Nutcracker in music class this week. The music of Pyotr Tchaikovsky is still present and the story is the same, but the dancing is in a more contemporary style rather than ballet.
Wishing you all a wonderful break from the music room!
Music Update: November
Welcome Back to Music!
The past few weeks have been filled with joyful music making. It's hard to believe that we are already in November - in music we have been working hard and having a lot of fun with our lessons and activities across all grade levels.
Our Busy Music Room🎶
Kindergarten
Students in Kindergarten have been working hard on learning how to find the steady beat in music. We have been finding the beat through singing, rhyming, clapping, patting, movement, and even instruments! Some of the songs and rhymes we have been learning are “Queen Caroline”, “Apple Tree”, “Johnny With One Hammer”, and “Apples Peaches Pears Plums”, just to name a few.
First Grade
Grade 1 students have recently been learning how to show where the steady beat is in a song. We knew from kindergarten how to feel the steady beat, but are learning how to match the sounds of a song to each beat in order to show where the beat is. Students practiced as a whole class, then in small groups by showing the beat to our song “Bee, Bee, Bumblebee”. Next, we will learn all about rhythm - or the way the words go in music.
Second Grade
In Grade 2, students have been working on their beginning compositional skills by using our new knowledge of ostinatos. Students have been working in small groups to compose ostinatos around a theme, and are then using their musical knowledge to turn the words into rhythmic ostinatos, which we then play on instruments!
Third Grade
Third Grade students have been learning how to read notes on the treble clef. This is a very important skill as we will soon get recorders, and students will need to read music in order to play this new instrument. We have been doing many activities to practice these music reading skills.
Fourth and Fifth Grade
Fifth and Fourth grade students continue to work on their recorder skills as we work through songs in our books “Be A Recorder Star”. I am so impressed with the musical skills of our older students!
Music Update: October
Welcome Back!
It has been so wonderful to welcome students back to music this school year! I have really enjoyed getting a chance to build relationships with all of our Elm Street School students while establishing our music classroom expectations and routines. We had such a great start to our school year, filled with lots of wonderful music making. In the last month, all grades have been working on building musical skills through fall activities and lessons.
Our Busy Music Room🎶
Kindergarten
Students in Kindergarten have been learning all about their different voices - whisper, call, speak, and sing. We have been using a song about apples to be able to both identify what voice they are hearing, and to demonstrate their understanding of the different voices. Students also really enjoyed the dance and game that goes along with this song!
First Grade
Grade 1 students have been learning about the xylophone! We are learning how to correctly hold mallets, how to bounce on the bars of a xylophone, and creating sound stories as a whole class.
Second Grade
In Grade 2, students have been learning all about ostinatos - or short repeating musical patterns. We have been focusing on apples, and exploring many different movements related to picking apples or turning them into something new. Next week, students will work in small groups to develop their own ostinatos.
Third Grade
Third Grade students have been expanding on their knowledge of the xylophone by learning a new technique of playing called a broken bordun. We added sounds to the poem “Dark Dark Room”.
Fourth and Fifth Grade
Fifth and Fourth grade students are jumping back into recorder! We reviewed how to read notes on the treble staff and are learning the recorder part to a new song for the month of October. Next week, we will add more instruments!
