Gen Ed Teachers
The CLASS tool is used in ASD General Education Preschool Programs as a Program Evaluation Tool required by DEED. The data informs professional development needs and program quality. The CLASS tool is not used as an evaluation of job performance. Teachers will receive range scores of High, Mid and Low and can use the data as self-reflection.
This year a variety of CLASS Certified Observers will be utilized to score all Gen Ed classrooms. Observers will include ASD Instructional Support, Beth Snyder ECE Specialist, and KCI Head Start CLASS Observers. Kimmer, Patrick and M will not be scoring their own sites; a different instructional support team member will score.
Observations will begin on November 6th. Observers will send a calendar invite and/or email to confirm the observation date and time. Please accept the invitation or follow up if the date does not work. If you are absent this day, please let the Observer know ASAP so they can reschedule.
Following are resources in our Handbook to support your understanding of the tool and the observation process. If you have more questions, please reach out to your Instructional Support. There is an optional orientation via Zoom on 11.2 9:30-10:30.
All classrooms should have a copy of this Dimensions Guide which offers a synopsis of the tool.

Busing Changes
Busing Changes: 3 YO Teachers: When changing a bus request from one session to another, please submit the transportation request form and email Katherine Staples about the change. The new bus system is not picking up these changes.
Please let Katherine know of any questions and concerns with transportation request forms and routing. Teachers and schools may communicate directly to dispatch when needed about late buses, etc. Other concerns and requests should come through preschool leadership.
Preschool Art Display
Information for the 2023/2024 Preschool Ed Center Show/Muldoon Library
We are excited to announce the first annual ASD Preschool Art Show at the Ed Center and Muldoon Library. If you are interested in participating here is the information below:
Why: Showcasing student artwork is a part of the state and national art standards that can start as early as preschool. Please know when picking artwork, all kids are IS art! From finger painting to drawing material exploration, all of it can be showcased. We want art that is authentically student-created and age-appropriate with minimal assistance from teachers. Please do not feel pressure for these to be "Pintresty" projects, showcasing artwork is about a win for students, not to meet adult aesthetic wants.
When: January 16th - Feb 23rd
Label Information Due Thursday, December 21st @4:00 Google Form: https://forms.gle/ZUTiyUaxj6pPrgRLA
Drop off @ Ed Center (Teaching and Learning) back Southeast corner of the Ed Center by December 22nd, @ 4:00pm
What: Each preschool teacher can submit 1 piece of artwork. Artwork can be no larger than 18” on either side for 2D works. If you have a 3D piece and you would like a 3D spot instead of submitting a 2D piece please sign up here (there are only 20 spots available) https://docs.google.com/document/d/1BRn6peLhs4uqkWd1xIlL4r8v8dqlQQWh3STvgTT0DNY/edit?usp=sharing).
How: The Preschool Department will assist in getting the artwork to and from the Ed Center and Muldoon Library. If you have a 3D piece please pack it in a secure cardboard box with paper or bubble wrap for secure transportation.
2D pieces must be matted. Please work with your school’s art teacher for requirements and assistance in matting. Mat board will be provided. Please look over these matting requirements (https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/12WJjKC6_zHF28QLj1IASerWusmcFSNTnvYkxi4-Al4c/edit?usp=sharing) and a how-to-video (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1XgdDksE9Hpee3I9LroYEPdFj84RWASjN/view?usp=sharing) . If you have any questions please ask your art teacher at your school

Elise McCarter
Hi, my name is Elise McCarter, but I go by "Ms. Mac" at school. This is my eighth-year teaching developmental preschool at Nunaka Valley. I have been in the district for a total of thirteen years. I have called Alaska home for 15 years and am grateful for the opportunities this state has provided me.
All of my family members and most of my friends live out of state. In my free time, I like to travel to see my family and friends (mainly in California and Arizona). I love puzzles, mystery books, card games, watching sitcoms, hiking with my dogs and visiting national parks. I have two goldendoodles who get me outside and on adventures. Animals are truly the best! And little kids. Love them too!
Laura McNown
Melinda Gorenca
This is my fifth year serving in a Developmental Preschool Teacher at Nunaka Valley Elementary.
I love to spend my free time with my three kids, I love traveling and trying new things with friends and family. As a family we love Alaska! I love my job! I love being in the classroom with little angels! I love being part of the ASD Preschool family.
