Wednesday, February 5th is World Read Aloud Day, a global effort to draw attention to the importance of sharing stories. Regardless of age, we all love a good story, and research shows that the benefits to students are substantial. From improving vocabulary and comprehension to encouraging diversity and inclusivity, reading aloud is the perfect way to slow down the classroom busyness and provide an opportunity for students to relax and de-stress. On Wednesday, February 5th we’re encouraging all FISD teachers in ALL grades and ALL content areas to set aside a few minutes and read to their students. To get started, reach out to your campus librarian who can provide you with book suggestions, then check out this list of resources for tips, sample social media messages, and the ‘why’ of read alouds. Share your pictures and experiences online and tag #ReadFISD and #WorldReadAloudDay.

Liberty Cyberhawks Robotics team attended a FIRST FTC Competition last Saturday in Arlington, Texas. The team was Captain Alliance for the Final Matches & placed 5th out of 29 teams at Lamar HS Qualifier Competition. Based on their tournament performance, the team was invited to a Second Wildcard Qualifier Competition in Lewisville. Good Luck Cyberhawk FTC Team #15536 this Saturday February 1st !

All sophomores and juniors have been enrolled in a free SAT Prep Course on Canvas. Within this course students will find 8 lessons that guide them through the three major pieces of the SAT (Reading, Writing and Language, and Math). Within each piece, they will focus on learning the structure of the test and questions, strategies taking that piece of the test, and finally, mastering the content that is on the test.

As a part of the course, students will link their College Board account to a Khan Academy account. The official practice will be completed within the Khan Academy site and unlocks opportunities for students to earn scholarships. Students in the class of 2021 who use free Official SAT Practice on Khan Academy® can earn a chance at a $1,000 scholarship. The College Board will award 150 Practice scholarships every month from January through October 2020. All entering students at an institution of higher education are required to show proof of an initial meningococcal vaccination or a booster dose during the five-year period prior to enrolling [SB 62, 83rd (R) Texas Legislature]. They must get the vaccine at least 10 days before the semester begins.

Those students who are attending out of state institutions should check with their school immunization requirements for enrollment.

Most students of the class of 2020 received their first meningitis vaccine greater than 5 years ago and will require a booster. Please contact me if you need information regarding your child’s last vaccine date at mikeskae@friscoisd.org or 469-633-5808.

Parents, if you have a child that will be 4 years old by September 1st and might qualify for our free full-day Pre-K program, please get signed up for a registration slot. We’re excited to begin registration for the 2020-21 school year in April.

Liberty High School will be administering the SAT test to all 11th graders on Wednesday March 4, 2020 during the school day. Students must arrive no later than 8:45 that day for a 9:00 a.m. start time. No registration is required for this test and it will be free of charge to students. Please avoid scheduling appointments on this day as no makeup test days will be offered.

Liberty High School has been able to take this step thanks to House Bill 3, approved by the 86th Legislature this past spring. The bill allocated funding to support college, career, and military readiness and will reimburse the district for administering the SAT.

You will receive another e-mail closer to the testing date with your testing room assignment and other testing information.

Please report flu confirmed by test in Dr. office or flu like symptoms: Fever over 100.4 F (38 C), Aching muscles, Chills and sweats, Headache, Dry, persistent cough, Fatigue and weakness, Nasal congestion, Sore throat.

Please be reminded of the district policy regarding FEVER. You must be fever free, not on fever reducers, for 24 hours before returning to school.

Ways to protect yourself: Take a flu shot, frequent handwashing/hand sanitizer, use of tissues when coughing and sneezing.(It helps to send tissues with your child), stay home if you have the flu, and keeping surfaces clean.
