The Cornell Quaranzine
Supporting Your Well-being - Spring 2021
3/2/2021
Dear Community,
And just like that, happy first week of March! Reflecting on this time last year reminds us of just how much our lives have changed in the past twelve months. It’s likely that many of us are still processing the changes we've experienced, both on your own and with others. We invite you to take a moment this week to express gratitude for what keeps you grounded as you enter March 2021. It may be key relationships, opportunities you receive, or lessons you have learned. As winter begins to give way to the spring we know is just around the corner, let’s continue to reflect, appreciate and learn, one day at a time.
Wishing you wellness,
The Skorton Center for Health Initiatives

But First: A Self Check-in
It’s tempting to view success as a linear trajectory (think climbing a flight of stairs or riding an elevator). But the truth is, success is not linear. Working toward a goal often requires that we move out of our comfort zone and even make and learn from mistakes along the way. Mistakes, rather than being a hindrance to success, actually play a critical role in our thinking and overall development. We can think of them as a launching pad to the next level of achievement.
Adopting a growth mindset allows us to view mistakes as “lessons” rather than “losses”. And, people with a growth mindset lean on others for support to help them grow and learn.
One month into the Spring 2021 semester we ask you to consider the following:
Do you have personal expectations regarding what a “successful” semester will look like for your academics, mental health, and social life?
What mistakes have you made so far this semester? What did they teach you?
Who do you reach out to for help in continuing your journey towards success this semester? This could be faculty, family, or friends.
This week, we've included opportunities and resources to help you make this semester a successful one. Whether you have academic, fitness, or social goals, we hope you'll find something for yourself in this weeks edition.
We all have a role to play to to keep COVID-19 in check
Tips for a Successful Semester
- Manage your time by using a semester calendar and a weekly planner. These calendars are available from the Learning Strategies Center: http://lsc.cornell.edu/semester-calendar/
- Stop procrastinating by exploring why you procrastinate so that you don’t fall behind. While many lectures are recorded and classes are asynchronous, you can still create your own 9am – 5pm schedule to keep yourself on track. Register for the March 12 Procrastination workshop offered by CAPS at Cornell Health.
- Learn from mistakes and see them as opportunities to learn and grow. Develop your growth mindset by recognizing & reframing negative self-talk and remembering "I made a mistake, but I am not a mistake".
- Get help when you need it! Connect with peers, TAs, and instructors when you're stuck (in COVID safe ways of course).
Sleep For Success!
Make sleep your superpower this semester by trying these tips to establish good "sleep hygiene" for optimal performance and health:
- Create a sleeping space that is dark, quiet, comfortable, and cool (blackout curtains, a fan or white noise machine, clean sheets, etc.)
- Set a regular sleep schedule, aiming for 7 - 9 hours a night
- Restrict caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and any other stimulants that can affect sleep
- Avoid "screen time" 30 - 60 minutes before bed
- Develop a winddown routine (e.g., read a book, listen to a podcast, take a warm shower, make a non-caffeinated warm beverage, stretch, journal, etc.)
Learn about the connection between sleep and academic performance by watching this short video: Sleep and Academic Performance
PSA: March is Women's History Month!
"Women's History Month, which is observed in the US, UK and Australia in March, and in October in Canada, began with a single day: International Women's Day is March 8, and it has been observed in some shape or form since 1911. It was officially commemorated by the United Nations in 1975 and recognized by the UN two years later." - CNN
