BATES' BITS
February 25, 2013
This week is Adopt-A-School week. Adopt-A-School is a wonderful partnership between education, business and the private sector in Tuscaloosa. To read more about Adopt-A-School please click http://www.tuscaloosachamber.com/aas/. Duncanville Middle Schools' adopter is The Legacy Connection (TLC). TLC is responsible for many fantastic events that take place at our school such as our student of the month lunches, the perfect attendance awards and the teacher's back to school breakfast, just to name a few. This week they are sponsoring a phone book recycling contest. Between Wednesday, February 27th thru Friday, March 1st all students are being asked to bring in old phone books to their first period teacher. The class who collects the most phone books will be awarded a pizza party!!!! So my 1st period students get busy finding those old phone books and let's eat some pizza!!! TLC will also be providing all students with an "I Love Reading" pencil to encourage reading. In addition, on Friday, all students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite Dr. Seuss character. Prizes will be awarded for cutest, craziest hair, most original, and brightest colors. So put your thinking caps on and get creative. I can't wait to see what great costumes my students will wear. Please visit http://www.callerconnection.com/aboutus.htm to find out more about our great adopter, TLC.

This Week in Math History
Although he is not a mathematician, this week I wanted everyone to read more about Theodor Seuss Geisel more commonly known as Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss was born on March 2, 1904 and wrote so many wonderful children's books. One of my favorite books growing up was "Ten Apples Up on Top", which of course is a counting book. I guess I loved math even when I was little. Please click http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/61105.Dr_Seuss to discover more about Dr. Seuss.
