PWHS Leadership Academy is an Instant Hit with Students
The Portsmouth West Leadership Academy held its first meeting Friday, Sept. 20, in Mr. Gilliland's room at 7:15 a.m. Created and advised by teacher Todd Gilliland, the Leadership Academy was developed to be a discussion group looking into the challenges of being a “leader” at our school and in our community. The group will meet every Friday morning working together to help each member become a positive leader and create a culture of excellence that will be a legacy to be passed on to future generations at Portsmouth West High School. Any student is welcome to attend. If interested, see Mr. Gilliland.

Agricultural Science Students Visit Farm Science Review
Students in a new elective class offered this year at PWHS, Agricultural Science, are digging in and getting their hands dirty with hands-on activities and field trips. Many students who are in Agricultural Science class are also members of FFA (Future Farmers of America), an intracurricular student organization for those interested in agriculture and leadership. Students (pictured) who are members of the FFA recently traveled to the Farm Science Review in London, Ohio. A smaller group of students will participate in the District Soils competition Thursday, Sept. 26, held in Gallipolis, Ohio.
HPAC
Get Fresh……..Some of our PWHS Anatomy students (pictured left with Mrs. Bazler) have recently joined a National program called HPAC (Health Professions Affinity Community). HPAC’s goals encourage students who are entering the health profession to assist with a community problem and to help find solutions.
Our HPAC program has identified a health need for some of our 9-12th grade students. We are offering free hygiene supplies throughout the day for students who are lacking in these basic needs. These supplies include deodorant, toothpaste/toothbrushes, shampoo and feminine products to help students “Get Fresh” and boost self-esteem. The unique thing about this project is that these specific supplies are placed in a locker for girls and a specific locker for boys. The locker combinations are found in the school restrooms so students can access these lockers whenever needed without having to ask an adult. So far we have had great success.
Students, feel free to access these lockers anytime throughout the day. We ask that you take only what you need and leave things for other students to access too. Items include: deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, feminine products, shampoo, combs, and brushes. Some school supplies are also available.
If you need items that are not in the lockers or you need the combination to the lockers (combinations should be in the restrooms), please see Mrs. Bazler, Ms. Russell, or the Guidance office.
Swim Team
After only their second year of existence, PWHS Swim Team is already making waves. Recently, the team created and now plan to distribute "lock-down buckets" to every classroom throughout the Washington-Nile district. The buckets are to provide additional security measures for students and staff in the event of a lock down during school hours.
In addition to the team, their parents, and other district staff members, several local sponsors donated items: Nile Township Fire Department; Matthew F. Loesch, Attorney at Law; Buckler and Sturgill, Attorneys at Law; and other community members who wish to remain anonymous.

2019 River Days Festivities a Success for PWHS Students
Congratulations to PWHS sophomore Julianna Parlin (pictured right) for winning The River Days "Voice High School Edition" competition Sept.4.
Congratulations, also, to Miss West 2019 Emily Sissel (pictured below) for her exemplary performance in the Portsmouth River Days Pageant held August 31. Sissel won $850 in scholarships for her various awards: Hard Work and Effort Award, Fitness Award, SSU Scholarship, and 2nd place overall for her float. "Although I did not win, I know in my heart that I honestly gave it my all. I have changed so much over these last six months and I truly owe it to River Days. I have gained self confidence along with many other things, but more than anything I made so many new best friends!" she said. "Thank you to my school, for allowing me to represent them and Ed Ingles for helping me build an amazing float.Thank you to Lana, Rob and their family, you guys have helped and taught me so much! Thank you Kennedy along with all the others that helped me you have made the person I am today! Lastly, thank you to my family, you all have supported and helped me so much, I love you all so much."
