NATIONAL CAREER DEVELOPMENT MONTH CAREER SPOTLIGHT--> ENGINEERING
Many engineers develop new products. During the process, they consider several factors. For example, in developing an industrial robot, engineers specify the functional requirements precisely; design and test the robot's components; integrate the components to produce the final design; and evaluate the design's overall effectiveness, cost, reliability, and safety. This process applies to the development of many different products, such as chemicals, computers, powerplants, helicopters, and toys.

Employers: College Grads Still Lacking Skills
Employers value a college degree but think students lack some skills, survey says. Click HERE for full article.
Dive Brief:
- More than 80% of employers in a new American Association of Colleges and Universities survey said they believe higher education prepares college graduates for workforce success — though some executives find students lack certain skills.
- Only 49% of employers reported thinking, for instance, that graduates are very prepared in oral communication, according to AAC&U’s report published Thursday. But about 80% said they agreed graduates overall are ready for the workplace.
- The survey also found strong employer support for microcredentials and student and faculty freedom to discuss any topic on a campus.
Early Decision 2 – still an option
Notifications for Early Decision (ED), Restricted Early Decision (RED), and Single Choice Early Action (SCEA) will be delivered within the next two weeks. This year, as in previous years, there will be many more tears than fist-bumps.
Here are some of the staggeringly competitive numbers of the ED applicant pool from Princeton Review’s Best 389 College & Universities – 2024 edition: Brown University – ED (www.brown.edu), 6,146 applied, 15 percent accepted; Columbia University – ED (www.columbia.edu), 6,299 applied, 12 percent accepted; Duke University – ED (www.duke.edu); 4,070 applied, 22 percent accepted; Vanderbilt University – ED (www.vanderbilt.edu), 5,044 applied, 18 percent accepted.

5 Ways Students Can Boost Their College Applications Over Winter Break
Winter break is not just a time for festive celebrations and relaxation; it also presents a valuable opportunity for high school students to make significant strides in building their college admissions profiles. While the holiday season is a well-deserved break from classes, extracurricular activities, and other commitments, strategic planning can set students apart and enhance their college applications. Whether a freshman or senior, high school students should take advantage of their weeks off from school to take stock of the past year and get ahead before the start of the coming semester. Is there significant potential for apprenticeships in the US market?
Nearly 128 million U.S. workers — about 70% of the entire US workforce — could stand to benefit from apprenticeships and on-the-job learning opportunities, opening up a key cohort of trained workers for employers, according to a Nov. 13 report by Multiverse and the Burning Glass Institute.
Apprenticeships still remain outside the mainstream in the U.S., the report said, but a U.S. workforce that would follow the U.K.’s “mature apprenticeship” system could host over 830,000 new apprenticeship opportunities per year, leading to $28.5 billion in wage increases. Work experience, not college, prepared employees for jobs, study finds
Dive Brief:
- Nearly half of workers (46%) don’t think higher education prepared them for their current jobs, according to a survey released Nov. 8 by online learning platform Go1. Sixty-one percent of the 3,000 full-time office workers surveyed in Australia, the U.S. and the U.K. said work experience was the best preparation for their positions, followed by formal on-the-job training and life experience.
- Half of the respondents said they wish they had known how to handle career progression prior to entering the workforce. Employees also said they wish they had better understood the fundamentals of the role and how to collaborate across departments.
- Sixty-six percent of those surveyed said learning and development opportunities make or break their decision to take a job or stay at a company, and 73% said their current employer provides L&D options that meet their needs, the survey found.

Positivity Project
Positivity Project- KINDNESS
Kindness is grounded in the belief of a common humanity in which others are worthy of care, attention, affection, and compassion. Kind people think about the needs and feelings of other people, and then act to help those people. Kind people are selfless. That is why a true act of kindness is distinct from helping another person in order to simply gain something for yourself. An individual with the strength of kindness helps others because it's’ the right thing to do, not because they expect any reciprocal treatment or gain in reputation.
In addition to empathy and sympathy, the character strength of kindness is indicative of an individual’s moral reasoning capacity and level of social responsibility. That means people who develop kindness possess a strong personal ethical responsibility to care for other people. And, their acts of kindness towards others lead to additional acts of kindness by those who have been helped.
Positivity Project- SUPPORTING OTHERS WHEN THEY STRUGGLE
Supporting other people when they struggle is a critical piece of being human. There are many different approaches to helping people who are struggling. These can include: listening while they describe an event and their feelings about it, taking action to help people in need, or simply just being there and sitting together in silence. Everyone faces tough days and needs support, and this support leads to a chain of prosocial behavior that makes us feel good about ourselves and our group.
