There are a few important reminders that you should know. First, online registration for the 2019-20 school year is now live (https://parentconnect.cnusd.k12.ca.us) and assistance can be obtained by contacting our registrar's office (951-736-3315). Second, summer school registration is also live and must also be completed online. Flyers for both registration processes can be found below. Third, tomorrow (March 16th) is CNUSD's Annual Festival of the Arts at Heritage Park...don't miss it! And finally, be sure to attend our Dual Enrollment Parent Information Night to learn about how your Panther can earn college credits while still a Corona High School student.

Come Celebrate the Arts on Saturday, March 16, 2019! The 3rd Annual CNUSD Festival of the Arts will held at Corona Heritage Park from 11am to 4pm. You'll enjoy gallery exhibitions of exceptional high school, middle school, and elementary school art. Immerse yourself in one of the many student performances from our district's finest choir, theater, band, and dance classes.There will be a film festival highlighting or visual production students alongside poetry readings. Get creative and make some art at one of the various interactive booths. Be sure to come hungry and grab a bite to eat from one of the food trucks and fulfill your shopping needs with our local artisan and craft vendors. See the model train display and the Corona Heritage museum! See you Saturday, March 16th, 11:00 am to 4:00 pm at Heritage Park, 510 W Foothill Parkway, Corona 92882. Parking is located at Calvary Chapel located across the street from the venue and throughout the surrounding community.

The Inland Health Coalition organized a great day of medical exploration for our Health Career Pathway students. Medical professionals from Kaiser School of Anesthesiology, Cavalry Ambulance, and Embrace DME visited our campus on March 14th and spent the morning providing ours students with hands-on experiences with some of the latest technology.

Engineering students are discovering how alternate fuels, such as Hydrogen batteries and solar panels, can be used to create energy. In a recent lesson, they learned how we can send electricity through water via a polymer film to split the hydrogen and oxygen bonds creating gaseous oxygen and hydrogen. Then they reversed the process and allowed the hydrogen to recombine with the oxygen creating electricity. Next, students built a small car equipped with a single drive motor by attaching a breadboard and wired up a circuit to send power to the motor. The power came from a hydrogen cell battery and solar panel. Our future engineers then developed many different circuits to maximize the energy coming from these sources; by utilizing a multimeter, they were able to take voltage, resistance, and current readings of their circuit. In the end, a new level of appreciation of how electricity works and the importance of alternate energy sources was gained by all!

We have officially begun testing our 300+ English Learners on the English Language Proficiency Assessments for California (ELPAC). This test measures our students' reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills and serves as a significant component of our accountability system. Our staff has been working hard to prepare our students with valuable communication skills and we are expecting that to reflect positively when we receive the official results.

The much anticipated Disney's The Little Mermaid finally debuted on March 14th! If you missed it, there are plenty of opportunities to still be a part of this amazing performance. You will be wowed by the talent and the costumes! Remaining shows are on March 14, 15, 16, 21, 22, & 23 at 7:00 pm and on March 16 & 23 at 2:00 pm. • Corona High School offers many exciting and educational challenges that are fun and both educational and career driven. NJROTC is one of many programs that offer cadets a chance to excel in discipline, leadership, sports, drill, community service and be part of an exciting program that prepares them for everyday life’s challenges, whether it be college, the workforce, or the military. We have two dedicated retired military instructors/mentors who look forward to engaging new cadets and offer a variety of skill sets to assist each cadet with their individual needs. Cadets earn a P.E. credit and can join for all four years or just give it a try for a year. Come on by and check us out. • Annual Mess Night will be held TONIGHT (March 15th) at the American Legion Hall in Corona. Cadets will participate in a military traditional dinner followed by DJ/Dancing and lots of fun! Our cadets work very hard all year long and this is a great opportunity for them to just have fun!
  

• NJROTC provided Color Guard and community service for the Health Fair held on our campus on March 9th. Each year Corona High School hosts the health fair and sets up medical labs and faculties for our community. As a sponsored site of this very important event, Corona NJROTC provides support but more importantly gives back to our community while assisting those who may not otherwise have an opportunity for free healthcare. We are honored to help

• Community Service for the Arts Festival will be provided on March 16th. NJROTC will provide traffic control and assist in escorting guests. This is another great opportunity for our cadets to provide support to our school community!

• Our 9th grade state physical fitness test is complete as of March 8th. Each 9th grade cadet tested in running, curl-ups, pushups, and did a variety of flexibility measurements for assessments. A great performance with 100 percent participation!

• District Math Field Day will be held on April 13th at Corona High School. Each year NJROTC provides a lunch (fundraiser) for participants and earns around $600 in profit. Fundraising help offset the cost of orientation tours, The Military Ball and Mess Nights. Be sure to stoip buy and support NJROTC at Math Field Day!

Our Oceanography students are studying coastal erosion. They are learning a surveying technique to measure change in beach profiles by working on the grass behind our baseball field. This was followed by calculating the difference in elevation (metric system) and then graph the elevation over distance. This was a great opportunity to apply what they have been studying in the classroom!

It is that time of year again: the physical fitness test! Testing has begun and will continue being administered throughout the month of March. It is important that we test 100% of our freshman class, so please encourage your student to take this test serious as it has class scheduling implications. If students do not pass this test, they MUST be in a PE class sophomore year, and will NOT be eligible to take the summer school PE course for advancement. Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project offers a great leadership opportunity for students, which takes place in Sacramento from July 13th-20th. The application deadline is April 15th. The following is taken directly from their website (https://www.clylp.org/sacramento):

"Since its inception in 1982, the Chicano Latino Youth Leadership Project (CLYLP) has offered a once in a lifetime opportunity for California’s youth in Sacramento. The Sacramento Leadership Conference (SLC) brings 120 high school students from throughout the state to participate in a week-long, intensive leadership program. Conference participants attend powerful workshops and seminars that enhance leadership skills, academic preparedness, self-esteem, cultural awareness, and provide an understanding of state and local government. Programming at all CLYLP programs including the SLC is based on CLYLP’s four curriculum “C’s”: Community, Culture, College, and Careers.

Participants will leave with valuable information and tools that they can begin using when they return to school in the Fall. Most importantly, students will leave with new friendships from throughout the state of California. Housing, meals, program materials and transportation to and from the conference are provided at no cost to the participants or their families."

We are looking for fun and dedicated students who believe in team work! Applications can be picked up in the Student Store, or from next year's yearbook teacher Mrs. Bentley in S-201.

GRAD NITE is May 30th and will be here before you know it! Tickets are $135 with ASB and $145 without. Don’t let your senior miss out on a fun-filled and memorable evening! This year's venue will be Magic Mountain and ticket prices includes FOOD and...A SEASON PASS! What a deal!

Our Winter Color Guard is off to its first competitive season in nearly 15 years! Their coach, Hannah Sorge, is working hard to shape our Panthers into a top performing unit. I observed part of one of their practices recently and can attest to their work ethic and dedication. For those who aren’t familiar, the Winter Color Guard does not perform with the marching band as the Fall Color Guard does. This group performs in a gym to recorded music using flags, rifles, and sometimes sabers. At their first competition, the judges moved them up a division due to their exceptional performance and ability level. That is very exciting, and it also makes the competition more difficult. The guard recently placed 5th at a competition at Ayala High School in Chino Hills. They are looking forward to performing for the school at the spring sports assembly. We are happy to see this competition emerge at Corona High School after being absent for 15 years!

Spring Sports

Baseball: Panthers have completed a 2-game sweep over Roosevelt High School winning on the road 4-0, then at home 2-0. This improves our overall record to 10-3, and a league record of 5-1, maintaining our first place position. Our next two games will be against Centennial (at home on March 19th and on the road on March 21st).

Softball: Our girls lost a close one at King High School, but showed a great effort and bringing our overall record to 5-5. Next game will be on March 19th at Santiago.

Track: Our boys/girls fell short of the victory on March 13th when we hosted Centennial high School, but had some individual successes. Notably, Bryan (pictured immediately below) ran his first track race ever in the 100m to lots of cheers and support from both Corona and Centennial athletes and fans. I had an opportunity to speak to mom shortly after his race and she could not be more proud of her Panther! Way to go, Bryan!!!

Misc./Alumni Updates

Lacrosse: We are looking to add a Lacrosse team for next school year! If your student is interested in trying a new sport and being part of a fun and exciting game, have him/her stop by the Athletics Office in the Gym for to get more information. How exciting would it be to have your child be part of the first ever LACROSSE team here at Corona High School???

Parents, if you have a student on an IEP or 504 plan and wish to see him/her go to college, then you do not want to miss this night! It's out third year providing this information and we've had some great success! Come learn about the college process and the implications of having an IEP.

The program is FREE and provides support and guidance to ensure a successful transition from high school to college, which will increase the likelihood of transferring to a 4-year university. It is also a great MONEY SAVER!!! Norco College will hold two separate parent session on their campus:

• May 9th in CSS217 (6:00-7:30 pm)

I am excited to share that beginning next school year we will be offering Norco College Dual Enrollment opportunities for our students. This means that students will be able to take college classes on our campus and earn college credits. There are more details to be considered and logistics to sort out, some sure to join us for our Parent Information Night on March 26th in our library beginning at 6:00 pm. See you there!

Below are some resources to help you (parents) understand and talk to your child about the dangers of sexting. This is a real thing that real kids do, and like other dangerous behaviors, it is essential that we, as parents, talk to our children about how to be safe in this technology-driven world.

Recently, staff members at Jefferson Elementary, led by Principal Alex Vasquez, sported their high school letterman jackets to promote high school programs and involvement to their students. This was also a way to promote success and make college a reality for their students. There were quite a few Corona High School jackets that day worn by alumni or parents of alumni/current Panthers. Even CNUSD Board President, Mary Ybarra got in on the fun by wearing one of her son's jacket. Alumni included Megan Gutierrez, and Susie Perez. Gloria Barajas wore her daughter's tennis jacket, Annette Barras wore her son's football jacket, Zondra Lawrence wore her son's football jersey, and Diane Rogers wore her nephew's Madrigals jacket.

The California Department of Education has named 18 Exemplary School Districts throughout the state and I am proud to announce that we (Corona-Norco) made the list! This is quite an honor considering that there are about 1,000 school districts in the entire state. According to CDE, "[t]his Exemplary Districts Award celebrates the achievements of districts that have implemented model practices that have had a positive impact on student outcomes."
