Cracking the Code
In Mrs. Dickerson's sixth-grade Social Studies class, students are exploring Ancient Egypt. In this activity, students were asked to decode hieroglyphics to solve a puzzle and unlock a secret lock box found in an unknown tomb that holds extremely valuable contents.
Hieroglyphics is a complex writing system that can be used to express ideas. For many years, no one understood hieroglyphics. Finally, the Rosetta Stone was discovered by French soldiers and helped archaeologists and linguists understand hieroglyphics. Students this year have been making connections with how ancient writing has inspired our language and writing system today.
Data Driven
Eighth-grade science students were charged with the task of designing a car from LEGO parts. Students tested several factors such as mass, length, width, height, aerodynamics, air resistance, terrain, tire type, temperature and weather. The students also manipulated the height of the ramp to see how ramp height also affects speed and acceleration. Once data was collected, students graphed the data and compared their results with other classes.
October is Dyslexia Awareness Month!
Throughout this month, the PARC is sharing a variety of information regarding dyslexia. There is no better time to learn how to support students struggling with dyslexia, while bringing awareness to others in the community about its effects on the student population.
Dyslexia is the most common cause of reading, writing, and spelling difficulties. Studies suggest one in five students are affected by dyslexia. Learn more about dyslexia by visiting the links below.
