What is canvas
Canvas is the online learning platform used by 3rd grade students and up. You may set up a parent account, which simply allows you to be an "observer" of your student's account. Basically, you can see your student's Canvas courses, but you cannot complete or submit assignments. If you do not wish to set up a parent account you may also have your student to pull up their account on a regular basis and review over it with them.
For assistance in Canvas you may go here: http://images.pcmac.org/SiSFiles/Schools/TN/BristolCitySchools/HolstonView/Uploads/Forms/Canvas_SUPPORT_HV_1.pdf
(This link can also be found on the school webpage under "quick links" as well as our sixth grade Canvas page.)
what is power school
Power School is the system that we use for student grades and attendance. Power School is the place to go if you want to check your student's current grades. It is important to check Power School regularly. Below is a link to Power School. This can also be accessed from the Holston View webpage.

Fourth Grade Canvas Course
Each student has a "homeroom" course. This is the common fourth grade area where the following important information is housed:
- teacher contact information and bios
- supply lists
- class schedules
- field trip information (including downloadable permission forms)
- important links that are commonly used
- student expectations
- weekly newsletter
- parent contact form
- student forms that are used at school
Please see the image below of the course and how it appears in Canvas.
Academic Canvas Courses
ACADEMIC CANVAS COURSES
Students have an "academic course" in Canvas for each subject area (math, reading, science, social studies). Within these courses there are the following common items that each teacher should have:
- teacher contact information
- state standards for the subject (A list of standards that we are required to teach for the academic area.)
- course information (You will find specific information for that particular academic course. This may include such items as grading policy, class expectations, etc.)
- resources (such as important links for that course that are frequently used)
- "modules" (Modules is where you will find assignments, tests, class work, etc. Modules are the "learning and content areas" for the course. Each subject may list modules differently, however modules are dated so that you can easily find assignments or activities for a certain date.)
IT IS IMPORTANT TO NOTE THAT YOUR STUDENT IS MOST AWARE OF WHAT WE HAVE DONE IN CLASS EACH DAY. THERE ARE TIMES THAT SCHEDULES AND DATES MUST BE CHANGED, REQUIRING FLEXIBILITY.
DO NOT RELY ON CANVAS FOR MISSING WORK AND GRADE INFORMATION. YOU WILL NEED TO REFER TO POWER SCHOOL FOR ACCURATE INFORMATION CONCERNING THIS.
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS IS THE FIRST YEAR TEACHERS HAVE USED CANVAS AS WELL. IT IS A LEARNING PROCESS FOR EVERYONE. SOME COURSES MAY BE IN THE PROCESS OF BEING DEVELOPED. IF YOU CANNOT FIND WHAT YOU ARE LOOKING FOR CONTACT THE TEACHER FOR THAT COURSE.
PLEASE NOTE THAT CANVAS MAY NOT BE USED EVERY DAY FOR ACADEMIC CLASSES. THERE WILL BE TIMES THAT ASSIGNMENTS ARE ON PAPER RATHER THEN CANVAS. THERE MAY NOT BE A MODULE FOR EVERY DAY.
