*VERY* Important Reminders About Competitions and Game Days
With the season getting into full gear and so many new families in the program, we thought it would be helpful to remind everyone of the following Director's Rules:
- Students are not allowed to eat in full uniform or costume. Please do not give them food during football games or competitions. This includes when they are on buses! (until they change out of full uniform, that is!)
- Students are required to move together as they enter and exit the competition field. We understand it is exciting when they win a competition, but directors ask that you do not try to pull them out of the line to take pictures or talk to them at those times. On competition days, there is usually time at the end to take pics with your student - especially if they win a championship! We then join them on the field to take all of the pictures!
- Football games and competitions have first-aid tents on site in case of an emergency. The boosters only carry band-aids, antibiotic ointment, and cortisone cream. We no longer carry any medications.
- If you take a video recording of the show, do not post it publicly.
We ask that you please respect the rules that the directors have put into place. They have put them into place for a reason. Our community has seen the benefits of these rules as they have a direct impact on their mindset. The more competitions you attend and the more bands you watch, the more you will see the differences between the programs and recognize that these rules are some of the differences between successful bands like ours and others.
Dudes (& Dudettes) with Drills
Calling all of our “Dudes with Drills”!! We need to finishing assembling all our props. It's ALL HANDS ON DECK this week during practices please!
Hat Crafting Help Needed this Week
Competition Day Send-offs
Send-offs are a tradition at Johnson High School of cheering for the students as the buses pass us on 967. We bring signs, including the infamous "big head" signs, to show our students support as they head to the competition. We stand along the road and enthusiastically cheer as the band passes by, and the students enjoy seeing everyone. The location and time will be given to everyone as soon as we know the departure schedule for the band, so watch social media and the GroupMe texts to know where to be next Saturday.
UNIFORM WASHING CREW
Next week we will need help pressing bibbers. A message with pick up and turn in information will go out tomorrow via GroupMe!

From the director
This past week was our homecoming parade and pep rally! The Jag Band and Guard did a great job representing our program. The community was super receptive of the performances. Additionally the Friday night football game saw the Jag Band march in their new “Against All Odds” uniforms. We are looking forward to next weeks performance where we hope to add more to our visual program including the debut of the new Color Guard costumes!
Celebration Time!!!! Congrats to the Jaguar Band for their performance in the first contest of this years season!! They traveled to San Antonio to participate in the Hornet Invitational Marching Contest. They opened the season with a great show! Their performance of “Against All Odds” placed them in the Champions Circle. Not only the the Jaguar Band place 1st, but they also swept the contest by taking Outstanding Music, Outstanding Percussion, Outstanding Color Guard and Outstanding Visual! What a great way to open the season! Let’s keep the momentum moving forward by working hard and getting better every day.
This week we will be traveling to Dripping Springs HS for an away football game. We are looking forward to sharing our show with the Dripping Springs audience.
This coming Saturday we are headed back to San Antonio for the Rocket Review Marching Contest. As the season progresses so does the level of competition; this upcoming contest has 33 bands participating. Let’s make this week a great week of rehearsals and preparation for these upcoming performances, the students hard work is paying off! Let’s keep it going, and as we close out each news letter “It’s A Great Day To Be A Jaguar”!
The Beat--A Weekly Update for Percussion-Specific Information
We had an awesome weekend! Starting with our very own Rachel Andersen representing at Homecoming, a really good halftime performance and a strong finish to our first marching contest of the season. It’s going to be a special year for sure!

QUESTIONS?
color guard corner
First, nice job on getting hair "up" for this past weekend's competition! We provided feedback to many of the guard members - mostly about taking the style and giving it more volume. Please visit with your guard member to see what changes need to be made for next week! A common helpful point was to keep in mind that "competition hair" this year will be less gel and more hairspray.
In case you missed it, the latest edition of The Guardian has all of the information for competition hair and makeup you will need for this week's game and competition.
We WILL wear full costumes this week! That includes big hair and card suit makeup!
UNIFORMS:
9/30 Game Uniform: Competition costume, black jazz shoes, show hair up (not low ponytail), show makeup
10/1 Competition Uniform: Competition costume, black jazz shoes, show hair up (not low ponytail), show makeup
REMINDERS:
*Students MUST wear black no-show THIN socks with black jazz shoes. Wearing jazz shoes without socks not only makes them smell very bad, the shoes can give you blisters.
**Students without jazz shoes on performance day will NOT be allowed to perform! Make sure you have everything packed the night BEFORE game / competition day!
- Monday: blue
- Tuesday: grey
- Thursday: pink
- Friday: black

Our housing contact emailed me yesterday to inform me that he was able to accommodate ALL of the extra rooms that our group requested at the students hotel, Wyndham West! So if you are receiving this email, then YOU HAVE A ROOM!
For those of you who indicated your willingness to share, please know that I did take you up on that offer and paired you up with someone else who also indicated a willingness to share.
Once I receive the final housing information from our contact, we will send you the information and method in which you can pay for your room.
Friendly reminder that ALL BAND AND GUARD students must stay in rooms with other band and guard students. They will not stay in rooms with parents.

BOA Midland:
Performance time: 4 pm
Please note on the BOA Midland daily schedule that the presentation of awards does not take place until 10:45 pm. Students will still need to 1) hopefully celebrate and take pictures, 2) load buses, and 3) change clothes and settle in for the long drive home. The actual schedule will be released by directors as we get closer to the competition date. However, based on last year’s experience, please know that we do not anticipate returning to JHS until around 5 am.
There is still room on the Fan Bus. If you would like to sign up, please do so here: https://www.johnsonbands.com/product-page/competition-fan-bus-tickets-2022
Schedule is not out as of yet but last year the finale wasn’t until 10:45 pm. Again, based on last year’s experience, please know that we do not anticipate returning to JHS until around 1:30 am.
Update on HOUSING requests for BOA Grand Nationals!
The reply I received from our BOA Housing POC regarding our request for additional rooms at the student’s hotel is that he “can likely add these rooms” but he would like to confirm with the hotel and will get back to me early this week. For those of you that submitted via the form or that contacted me directly, please know that I will let you know as soon as I get word!
Here is our DRAFT itinerary for BOA Grand Nationals. Please keep in mind that this itinerary can and will change as needed. Please be flexible, patient, and understanding! The Info Packet will also be updated as we get closer to competition.
