Message from Mrs. Harvey
Hello and happy last week before winter break! I always love this last week before break. There are so many fun activities taking place in classes and the excited anticipation of a long break. This week we are stepping up the fun with a spirit week! There are several special projects taking place like beading in Ms. Curry's class, candy houses in Ms. Arnold's class, and the entire TCLL program will be caroling this week (just to name a few). Please make sure to read over the class newsletters for all of the fun activities coming up. I hope you all have a restful break and a very Happy New Year!
BIG NEWS FOR HARBORVIEW! MRS. BOX IS BACK!!
I am so excited to announce that Molly Box, former principal of Harborview Elementary, is returning as interim principal for the Tlingit Culture Language and LIteracy (TCLL) program! Mrs. Box will take the lead of this program for the rest of this school year. The TCLL program has received a grant from Sealaska Heritage Institute to continue their work for the next 3 years. This program started as a Kindergarten classroom over 20 years ago and has grown to include 3 classrooms serving students in Kindergarten through 5th grade! The new grant is looking to grow the program to serve students through 8th grade and continue the work to revitalize the Tlingit language and grow as a dual language program! It is all very exciting and it is a lot of work when implementing the goals of a grant therefore part of the grant includes an administrator to lead that work and the program. I have loved the time I have spent learning from this amazing staff and I am excited to work with Mrs. Box to support the work to come!
While Mrs. Box is stepping in to help with the grant administration this year, the full time position will be open soon to search for a permanent administrator to take over next fall. If you know of anyone who has their administator certification and who would be perfect for this position, please encourage them to watch for the opening and to reach out if they would like any more information!
IT LOOKS LIKE WE ARE IN FOR SOME COOOOOLD TEMPS!
Our baseline for going outside is 0 degrees so as we dip lower (with windchill) we may be looking at some indoor recess this week. That being said, if the weather ends up not being that cold then we will still go outside so please dress for cold recesses just in case. As always, we are here to help so if you need support getting a warm winter coat, snowpants, gloves, hats, or boots please reach out. We will also be taking items to Good Will that are in our lost and found after Wednesday so please check the pictures below and if you see something familiar you are welcome to come in any time to pick things up or ask your kiddo to go grab their stuff. We deliver things with names on them back to kids but most of these items you see have no names!
PLEASE CHECK THIS PIC FOR ITEMS YOU ARE MISSING
ODDLY WE HAVE SEVERAL SINGLE SHOES? DO YOU SEE A MISSING MATE? HATS AND GLOVES WITH NO NAMES TOO.
PLEASE COME GRAB ANYTHING YOU SEE THAT IS YOURS!
DOOR DECORATING CONTEST RESULTS ARE IN!
Classes have spent the last few weeks decorating their doors for winter. Students voted on Friday and the results are in! We had a tie for the primary classes with Mr. Josh and Mrs. Arnold sharing the win. For intermediate Ms. Milligan's class prevailed and for specialists we have Ms. April and Ms. Steph sharing the title. Students in these classes will receive a special treat on the Wednesday before break! Great job to all of the participants....it was a very close contest!
SPIRIT WEEK THIS WEEK!!
Monday is Decades Day and I am just a little too excited to relive my glory days! I mean who didn't love the big hair don't care 80's look?? Kids can choose any decade they want and then just have fun with it!
Tuesday is Doppelganger Day (aka twin day) where kids can dress up with a friend to match, or they can dress as their favorite teacher or anime character (so there are options!) :) Hmmm I think Mrs. Box and I might have to do this one!
Wednesday is Pajama Day and kids can bring a favorite stuffed animal as long as it fits inside their backpack.
