School News for Residents of Kimberly Area School District

Board Meeting Summary 11/13/2023
- Nurses Rebecca Jensen and Katy Dedering presented their annual summary to the Board. They lead the Health Services department, which consists not only of school nurses, but also includes health secretaries and over 200 staff members around the District who are trained in emergency response. They shared their purpose of ensuring health needs are met so students are able to access and engage in learning. Their primary duties deal with management of illness, accidental injury and medication administration. They are responsible for oversight and training in regard to illnesses such as asthma care and diabetes management as well as seizure response, catheterization, and hearing and vision screening, among others. In addition they administer medications and treat injuries illnesses. They continue to study and adjust to make improvements in processes, with the end goal of keeping students healthy and engaged in learning, by spending less time in the health room and more time in class.
- Becky Hansen, Executive Director of Business Services and Sustainability, recommended an additional compensation increase for staff for the 2023-24 school year. The Board approved a 4.7% increase in March, and approved an additional 1.3% Monday night. This equates to a total of 6% for non-paraprofessional staff and and 8% for paraprofessionals for the current school year. The increase will take effect on December 1, 2023.
- The Board approved the early retirement request for Jason Jansen, Science & Math Teacher at J.R. Gerritts Middle School, effective June 6, 2024.
- The Board approved Tim Fosshage to continue as the Foster Care Designee for the District for the upcoming year.
- Bob Mayfield, Superintendent, presented the first reading of policies which included new and replacement policies 164 - Meetings; 5350 - Suicide Prevention, Intervention and Postvention; 6610 - Non district-Supported Student Activity Accounts; 7250.01 - Memorials for Staff and Students; 8700 - Nursing Mothers; and 8913 - Section 504/ADA Prohibition Against Disability Discrimination in Employment, as well as changes to policies 142.1 - Electoral Process; 143.1 Public Expression of Board Members; 144.3 Conflict of Interest; 1260 - Incapacity of the Superintendent; 2340 - District-Sponsored Trips; 2451 - Program and Curriculum Modifications; 2521 - Selection of Instructional Materials and Equipment; 3139/4139 - Staff Discipline; and 5113 - Open Enrollment Program (Inter-District); 5200 - Attendance; 5200.01 - Full Time Student; 5530 - Student Use or Possession of Intoxicants, Drugs, or Paraphernalia; 6151 - Returned/Outstanding-Stale Checks; 7440.01 - Video Surveillance and Electronic Monitoring; and 9211 - District - Supported Organizations. Additional policies were deleted due to being replaced or outdated. These included 164.1 - Regular Meetings; 164.2 - Special Meetings; 165.1 - Notice of Regular Meetings; 165.2 - Notice of Special Meetings; 1623/3123/4123 - Prohibition Against Disability Discrimination in Employment; 3120.07 - Employment of Casual Resource Personnel; 4430.05 - Nursing Mothers; 5350 - Student Suicide; 6610 - Student Activity Fund; and 9210 - Parent Organizations.
