Fisher Family Update
December 15, 2023

Dear Fisher Families,
We have one more week until the winter break and the excitement is mounting at Fisher School! Next Friday, December 22nd is our second annual Friday FUNday. We have a grade level game of Simon Says and BINGO planned as well as some arts and crafts, face painting and more. It's going to truly be a FUN day! On FUNday we ask that all families send in a "special snack" next Friday.
We will also have a holiday/winter themed Spirit Week next week organized by our Grade 5 Student Council. Please see below for details regarding all the fun events next week.
Friday 12/22 is a FULL DAY of school for all WPS students. Fisher dismissal will be at its usual time of 3:25.
I hope you all enjoy the weekend,
Brian
Friday FUNday Update - special snack
The second annual "Funday" for our students on Friday, December 22nd. Since our day is going to be different we were hoping you could help us make snack look a little different too. Please plan on packing a special snack for your student on 12/22. The snack could include some of their favorite fruits, vegetables, chips or cookies along with a drink (no soda and no glass containers please) in a fun and festive bag. A decorated brown bag will do! Please remember that we are a peanut safe school and to check in with your child's teacher if you have any questions. Thank you for your help and we look forward to a very Funday on Friday (12/22)!
Spirit Week
The Student Council wants to let you know that Spirit Week is coming!

The 5th grade FIRST Lego League (FLL) team RadBots, part of Walpole Robotics, is heading to the state championship tomorrow! Aayush A has put in a tremendous amount of work this season on the the team's robot design and innovation project! The team won a bid to states, being held at WPI tomorrow, by qualifying at last weekend's regional competition in Norborough. Good luck this weekend Aayush!
Read with Me - Volunteers Needed
We are looking for parent volunteers to come in and read aloud to students (not your own child) from a Battle of the Book selection. We had a "trial run" this week and found that the students really benefitted from the support, and have heard from some adults that it is a rewarding experience for them as well! Click the form below to sign up and get more detailed information. The 2 dates available are December 21st and January 11th. You MUST have a valid CORI form to partcipate.
Lost and Found
All items will be donated during the winter break, please stop by before then to find anything misplaced.
Fisher School Singalong
Let's ALL raise our voices together, letting EVERYONE in your family experience the joy of having THE ENTIRE FAMILY sing together, and make memories that will last a lifetime!
December 21st, 2023
6:00-6:45pm and 7:15-8:00pm
INSTRUCTIONS:
Bring a blanket big enough to seat your family, like at a summer picnic. Stake your spot in the auditorium!
Your blanket is for YOUR family (and grandparents, cousins, older and younger siblings,...)
This isn’t a “run around with your friends” night, but rather a night to snuggle up as a family - among the larger “Fisher family” - and sing a variety of songs that are celebrated by our families here in our school. Hearing parents, grandparents, cousins and siblings sing all together brings our ENTIRE Fisher family together and gives us memories that will last a lifetime!
(PARENTS: Choose which timeslot works best for your family. Those with toddlers may wish to come to the first one in order to get their children to bed. But…it’s a “WHATEVER WORKS BEST FOR YOUR FAMILY” laidback event! I can’t wait to see you!)
To help with song selection, please fill out this very brief form:

Mr. Holmes
Math information
With Winter Break a week away, we thought it would be the perfect time to share some fun math games that can be played at home. Math games have many positive benefits that go beyond just math skills and concepts. It is wonderful that they help children reinforce and practice math skills, but they also can help reduce the fear of making mistakes, help foster communication and social emotional skills, build a love of math, and develop strategic thinking skills. “Children learn to solve problems together, think strategically about what moves to make, and how to be successful in playing the game. Throughout a math game, children make a lot of strategic decisions as they problem solve and plan their next move.” - 10 Benefits of Using Math Games with Students.
Our Family Math Site is full of games and activities that your children can do with a grown up, a friend, a sibling, or any willing participant! Many only need a deck of cards or a set of dice. Most board games involve some type of math and definitely involve critical thinking skills around problem solving and decision making. Play is an important part of learning at all levels, in the words of Mr. Rogers, “Play is often talked about as if it were a relief from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of childhood.”
