Ridgecrest Library

We are so excited to welcome students to the Ridgecrest Library! The library was ready for check out on the first day of school. We want books in students' hands as soon as possible. We are committed to making the Ridgecrest Library your child's favorite place in the school!

• explore the best children's books with students, choosing books that are interesting, as well as expanding reading experiences beyond what is already known.
• read aloud many everybody, nonfiction, and fiction books, practicing reading and responding to reading through art, writing, drama, music, and discussion, among other activities.
• recommend books to your children based on their interests and abilities.
• purchase hundreds of new books, chosen by review and recommendation from teachers, librarians, students and families, including great nonfiction titles to help us meet the new Common Core State Standard requirements.
• teach research and technology skills appropriate for developmental needs.
• stress good digital citizenship and internet awareness, helping children make safe, positive, and ethical decisions while online.
• learn about primary and secondary sources and what they can teach us through careful study.
• work closely with classroom teachers to find materials to support the classroom curriculum and students' independent reading.
• team with community organizations such as the King County Library System, including coaching multiple Global Reading Challenge teams, a KCLS program for 4th and 5th graders.

Students check out during their library class time, 45 minutes once a week. The library is also open all day, so with permission from their teacher, students can return and check out books any time they need new titles. Students are allowed to check out books even if they have overdue books. We are starting R.O.B.O.T., Return Our Books On Time, encouraging classes to work together to reduce overdue books.
