Changes to the 2022 College Timetable
A central focus of our College community is to support wellbeing for both staff and students.
Our STRIVE program continued on a daily basis during lockdown as we were cognisant to the
importance of social contact and routine supporting the wellbeing of all students. Over the past term we have been reviewing our Wellbeing policies and procedures to update and strengthen STRIVE. A key outcome of this review has been a change in time for STRIVE from 8:05am at the start of the day to 10:40. With the continued implementation of COMPASS the need for administration time in the morning has been reduced. Therefore, students are able to commence their learning from the first bell of the day. This will also lead to further development of our STRIVE teaching program allowing for an emphasis on teaching the skills of positive psychology.
At St Benedict’s teachers mark official rolls each lesson so the Period 1 roll marking will replace STRIVE as the roll that is used to send absent notifications to parents and carers in 2022.
Year 12 Body of Work
In my last article, I mentioned that Year 12 handed in their Body of Works for marking.
Since then, Year 12 have also completed the HSC Examination for our course.
Today, I would like to share photos of the BOWs students created for the practical component of our course.
I am so proud of each of our students who created a lot of this work via Zoom throughout the lockdown in Term 3. I am so proud of the dedication you demonstrated throughout the year, but mostly throughout remote learning.
Congratulations Year 12!
Year 7 botany relief prints
Year 7 have been very busy in the art rooms lately. They have completed their wonderful botany relief prints and have now moved on to producing their own children’s story zines inspired by our artist in focus, John Wolseley.
Congratulations on your consistent hard work throughout 2021 Year 7, your art teachers are so proud of your efforts.

Our Winning Team - Year 8 MISA Debating
It is with the greatest of pleasure that I announce the Year 8, St Benedict Debating team as the winners of the MISA grand final.
The topic was that every Australian student should learn an Asian language. The toss saw us placed as the affirmative team with one hour to prepare our argument.
Madison H. was superb as she presented a clear definition and a logical model as she expertly introduced her team members and their stance.
Jada H. was outstanding in her passionate rebuttal of the negative team's points and in presenting the affirmative's continued case.
Samantha E. was marvellous in how firm and thorough her rebuttal was and in linking these with the affirmative team's stance.
Jenna S. was formidable in providing support during both the preparation stage and for rebuttals throughout the debate.
A big thank you to Rhianna V for chair personing the debate today.

“Christmas is joy, religious joy, an inner joy of light and peace”, Pope Francis.
Last week in the newsletter, I discussed the initiatives the Social Justice team have been organising and promoting in school throughout this term. Students began collecting items to make up hampers for Catholic Care who support a number of families in the Macarthur area who are finding it difficult, particularly at this time of the year.
We have been overwhelmed with the generosity of our school community. Not only have we created all the food hampers required, but we had 12 children to buy a Christmas gift for. Initially we intended for one gift to be bought from each Strive group, but in true Bennies style, our wonderful school community purchased a number of gifts for each child. This means that each of the children we are looking after, will wake up on Christmas morning with at least four gifts each. Some with even more!
As the Social Justice Coordinator, I have been bursting with pride for my team watching them every morning promote this initiative but also for all of our students who have generously donated these items. It is wonderful to see our kids make a difference in other people’s lives.
On Tuesday, students were encouraged to wear a Christmas t-shirt and/or accessory to support St Vincent de Paul by donating a gold coin. Thank you to everyone who participated. We will be doing this again on Tuesday Week 10 to continue raising money for Vinnies. The team is looking forward to seeing even more students and staff taking part in the Christmas cheer for a great cause.
If you are interested in joining our team please send me an email so I can add you to our Google Classroom. We now have 40 members from Year 7 to Year 12 and are always happy to welcome new members to our team.

Dear Students, Parents/Carers
It's that wonderful time of year again "December"
In the office we find December is a great time to clean up, condense, regroup and look forward to a fresh start next year.
In order to achieve this, we need your help with Lost Property. We have so many items without names in lost property that surely someone must remember misplacing a Jumper, Sports Jacket, Cap, or Blazer.
We even have 1 black school shoe, now you ask how could that be ?
We have an answer - maybe it's a Tech shoe? Maybe a change of clothes after school? but this shoe and all our other unnamed items need their owner to collect them.. Unfortunately if these unnamed items are not claimed by next week, they will all be donated to the clothing pool - except the shoe, we are saddened to say, although in great condition, and has been here for quite some time, without the other - this shoe is of no use to anyone.
Parents/carers, please, if you could take a moment, as possibly your child hasn't, to please check if you have all parts of the College uniform you have paid for - in your wardrobe.
If not, please call or email the office info@sbccdow.catholic.edu.au and we will certainly endeavour to match articles to students and please don't forget we have " a shoe."
We almost forgot to mention the reading glasses and invisaligns - makes you wonder, - just like the shoe ?

2022 School Transport
2022 school travel applications are now open
Students who need a School Opal card or travel pass for 2022 can apply now. A new
application will need to be submitted if they are applying for a school travel pass for
the first time, or if they are requesting an additional travel entitlement as a result of a
new shared parental responsibility situation (e.g. joint custody).
Students who change address, school, campus location, or who have repeated a year
or received an expiry notification from Transport for NSW for their school travel
entitlement should renew or update their details before the end of term 4. This will
ensure that schools can endorse applications and current entitlements are updated
and remain valid. School Opal card holders will have the changes applied to their
existing card.
If a student’s distance eligibility has changed based on their grade the system will
automatically update their entitlement if they meet the new criteria. If they do not
meet the new eligibility criteria, they will receive an expiry notification via email.
Students who have an entitlement approved under a medical condition that is due to
expire will receive a notification advising them to re-apply.
Term Bus Pass holders will receive a notification to re-apply.
Students in the Opal network applying for an Opal card (including a Term Bus Pass)
for the first time will receive their Student Opal card at their nominated postal
address. Cards will be mailed out from January 2022.
Students living in rural and regional (R&R) areas should receive their travel pass at
the start of the new school year from their nominated transport operator. It may
come via the school or be sent directly to them at home. Note: some R&R operators
do not issue travel passes. Students/parents should confirm with their nominated
operator if they do not receive a pass.
School Student Transport Scheme site change
On 1 October 2021 the School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) information
and application portal was moved to transportnsw.info. This will assist families
to find all their travel information in the one place.
Travel from Term 1 2022
We ask that parents plan ahead and make sure their child knows which service/s to use
and has a valid ticket to travel; either a School Opal card or Child/Youth Opal card
(within Greater Sydney) or a School Travel Pass (outside Greater Sydney), from the start
of the school year.
Applications for the School Student Transport Scheme (SSTS) open at the start of Term
4 2021 for travel in 2022, so parents/students can apply or update details early and be
ready for the start of the new school year.
Most students using the Opal network will not need a new Opal card and can continue
travelling on their existing card each year.
The start of the year is a difficult period for local bus operators, and students travelling
without a valid ticket make service planning and operations increasingly difficult.
We recognise that for some families last minute changes to school enrolments mean
they may not have a School Opal card or Travel Pass for the start of term. In the Opal
network, we strongly encourage these families to have their children travel on a
Child/Youth Opal card until they receive their valid School Opal card. If outside Greater
Sydney, parents should contact their local bus operator to discuss their travel needs.
Bus operators are flexible and understanding, particularly at the start of the school
year, and will ensure students can travel safely to and from school. But to best support
our operators we encourage all students to have a valid ticket, as early as possible, from
the start of the school year.
Please also remember that students using Opal cards must tap on and tap off in line
with the Student code of conduct and Opal terms of use.
