Dear CES Family,

Every month we have an emergency preparedness drill of some sort. These include armed intruder, fire, earthquake, and bus evacuation drills.

Next week we will be conducting both a bus evacuation drill and an armed intruder drill on separate days. The armed intruder drill, conducted once a year, is now called an A.L.I.C.E. drill. A.L.I.C.E. stands for: Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter and Evacuate and is a set of proactive strategies that are designed to increase student and staff safety during an active shooter event. Our staff participates in specialized training for this type of event and once a year we schedule a drill so that staff and students can practice and evaluate our current procedures. The purpose of conducting this drill is the same as the other safety drills we regularly conduct: it helps our staff and students be better prepared in the event of an emergency. Please let me know if you have any questions about any of these safety trainings.

On a much lighter and unrelated note, I have the pleasure of being in CES classrooms every day. And I get to see some great teaching and student work. I would like to share a piece of student work with you that I saw today. It comes from Zach Huckins in response to a writing prompt asking the question, "Why is school important?" His response is priceless: "School is importent because you are not alone and you are with somebody." I encourage you to check out the illustration in the picture. Zach, thanks for sharing your wisdom with us. We agree!

9/29 Jog-A-Thon Event!

10/2 to 10/6 Parent Conferences

Plumas Arts is hosting an after-school art program starting in October. Art is awesome! Check out the flier for details. Designed for students in grades 2-8, the session for grades 2-5 will be held at the Chester Memorial Hall. For students in grades 6-8, the location will be Chester Junior/Senior High School.

One of the great things going on at CES is our garden. Have you seen it? It's pretty amazing. The sunflower in this picture measures somewhere between fifteen and twenty feet tall. In the foreground is our garden manager, Ms. Mandy Hull. She's done a great job of making our garden a highlight of the campus. Did you know we have a Garden Club? Our students love participating.
