Tuxedo Talk

NOVEMBER 2023
Message from the Superintendent
Dear Tuxedo Community,
As we move toward Thanksgiving, I hope you have had the chance to enjoy some of the wonderful fall activities in our school community.
Kindergarten and first grade classes from George Grant Mason Elementary took field trips to local farms last month, where students not only enjoyed the outdoors, but also engaged in some follow up lessons in the classroom that incorporated hands-on STEM activities (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).
In our rapidly changing world, we are witnessing a shift towards digitalization and automation in almost every field. STEM education is becoming increasingly important as it provides students with the skills and knowledge necessary for the jobs of tomorrow. STEM education fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity skills, which are essential for success in the 21st century.
We are extremely proud that George F. Baker High School is the only school in New York State to earn a “National Certificate for STEM Excellence (NCSE)” The certificate was awarded to the district in 2022 by the National Institute for STEM Education. NISE recognizes “individual school campuses for their commitment to – and growth in – teachers’ implementation of 21st Century and STEM strategies.”
STEM education provides students with opportunities to explore and discover the world around them. It encourages children to think about real-world problems and to develop innovative solutions. STEM education is also inclusive, as it provides opportunities for students from all backgrounds and genders to thrive in their studies and future careers.
I urge all of our students to take advantage of the STEM learning resources available here at TUFSD. I also encourage parents and teachers to support and encourage students in STEM learning, as it will benefit them greatly in their future.
As we approach the holiday season, I reflect on how grateful I am for the Tuxedo community’s support in fostering a culture of learning and caring in our schools.
Sincerely,
Jeff White

Sean Essoka
Sean Essoka possesses such a calm, mature and pleasant demeanor that it is hard to believe he is only a senior in high school. “He greets everyone with a smile, a nod and a friendly hello,” said George F. Baker High School teacher Ryan Fitzsimmons. As noteworthy as his quiet, thoughtful and kind nature is, Sean’s academic successes are even more impressive. Read More

Varsity Volleyball
Congratulations to Tuxedo Tornadoes Varsity Volleyball team who won the Class D Section IX title on November 11! They will advance to the Class D State Tournament on November 18 in Lake George, NY. We are so proud of our Lady Tornadoes!
Modified Soccer
Modified Soccer is back at TUFSD! This year marks the return of modified soccer for seventh and eight graders after a brief hiatus. The season had the Tornadoes competing against neighboring Orange County schools and sister school Green Meadow. The revival of modified soccer offers younger students the opportunity to be involved in a team sport, which research has shown to help in the development of critical thinking, communication skills and self-confidence.
