Hello, USD 231 Patrons and Employees.
I can't believe Thursday, August 10, is the first day of the 2023-24 school year! In my opinion, "First Days' of School" are one of the most exciting school days of any school year.
This newsletter serves more as a reminder for several important items as Thursday approaches:
First Days of School
Thursday, August 10 - Early Dismissal
Grades K-4
Arrival : 8:00 a.m. - 8:15 a.m.
School begins at : 8:20 a.m.
Early release: 11:25 a.m. (buses will run routes). NO lunch served.
Grades 5-8
Arrival : 7:45 a.m. - 8:15 a.m.
School begins at : 8:10 a.m.
Early release: 11:15 a.m. (buses will run routes). NO lunch served.
Grade 9 and any student new to GEHS
Arrival: 8:40 a.m. - 9:00 a.m.
School begins at : 9:00 a.m.
Dismissal Time: 1:30 p.m. - 1:40 p.m. (buses will run routes). Lunch WILL be served.
Friday, August 11 - Grades K - 12 - Regular Schedule (see below)
Elementary
Arrival : 8:00 a.m. - 8:15 a.m.
School begins at : 8:20 a.m.
Dismissal Time: 3:25 p.m.
Middle School
Arrival : 7:45 a.m. - 8:15 a.m.
School begins at : 8:10 a.m.
Dismissal Time: 3:15 p.m.
High School
Arrival : 7:30 a.m. - 7:55 a.m.
School begins at : 8:00 a.m.
Dismissal Time: 3:00 p.m.
Help Us Share Good News
As we kick off the 2023-24 school year, the Community Relations Department is looking forward to sharing your stories! Our goal is to ensure we are aware of all the amazing accomplishments in our schools.
Below is a form to keep Community Relations and district leadership aware and informed about upcoming events.
Please be sure to fill out this FORM to:
- Let Community Relations know about potential story ideas and consider the event for coverage on the district website, social media channels, and potentially through local media.
- Invite the Superintendent, Superintendent’s Leadership Team, or Board of Education to an event.
Additionally, if you have student or staff awards, accomplishments, interesting story ideas to share, or fantastic programs to highlight, please fill out the aforementioned form.
Closing
I hope that both you and your children are eagerly anticipating the upcoming school year, much like the excitement our employees are feeling! Our administrative team will be out in buildings on Thursday and Friday greeting students. Be sure to say "hi" when dropping off or picking up your children!

Back-to-School Central
USD 231 schools re-open our doors to students on August 10 and 11! We have compiled almost everything you will need - from immunizations to bus route information to food service details and much, much more - all in one location to make the start of your school year as smooth as possible!

Enrollment for the 2023-24 School Year
Enrollment for students new to the district and returning student re-enrollment went live on Wednesday, July 19 (9:00 a.m.). Student schedules went live for students and parents to view on Wednesday, August 9 (9:00 a.m.). To access the enrollment page, click the image on the right/above.
Change to National School Breakfast and Lunch Program
As a reminder, federal funding support that has provided students free school breakfasts and lunches in the past has ended. With this in mind, please be advised of the following items.
For the 2023-24 school year, families will once again pay full price for student breakfasts and lunches unless they apply and qualify for free or reduced meals through the district’s application process.
The new free and reduced application for 2023-24 is available on the USD 231 Nutrition Services webpage.
Families must apply for free or reduced food service and student registration fees each year.
Filling out the free and reduced application will be necessary before students can access free or reduced breakfast and lunches during the 2023-24 school year.
Transportation for SY 23-24
Transportation enrollment for the 2023/2024 school year is underway.

The enrollment form is a PDF you can complete, save, and email to First Student. You can submit your form by saving a copy of the completed PDF and emailing to usd231transportation@firstgroup.com or you can drop it off at our office (19450 S. Gardner Road).
Annual Public Notice Regarding Developmental Screenings
The Gardner Edgerton School District offers developmental screenings for children up to 5 years (who are not kindergarten eligible). We also coordinate services with Infant Toddler Services of Johnson County (ITS) and USD 231 Parents as Teachers (PAT) for children birth to 3 years of age. If you live in the Gardner Edgerton district boundaries and have a child from birth to age 5 and you have concerns about his or her development, please call the Special Services Office at (913) 856-2080 to set up an appointment for screening.
There are other rights, which by federal and state laws are afforded to you and your exceptional child. A copy of these rights may be obtained free of charge by contacting the address or phone number below.
If you have a child who you feel may be in need of special education service(s), please contact your child’s building principal or Gardner Edgerton Special Services, 231 E Main, Gardner, KS 66030 — phone (913) 856-2080.
