Introduction

Amid school closures due to the Covid-19 pandemic, educators have turned to digital platforms to provide instruction. Typically, it would be a copyright violation to read published stories online, but in order to support students, many publishers have adapted their guidelines for doing Read Alouds Online.

Additionally, authors have stepped forward to read aloud from their own books and, in some cases, provide activities and resources.

School Library Journal List of Publishers

The School Library Journal article, Publishers Adapt Policies to Help Educators, published March 18, 2020, has provided a list of publishers who have adapted policies for Virtual Read Alouds. Publishers include:

Scholastic
Penguin Random House
Little, Brown
Macmillan
Harper Collins
Lee and Low
Candlewick
Simon & Schuster

Disney Publishing Worldwide

This includes their imprints, too.

Guidelines for Virtual Read Alouds

Please note at the beginning of your recording that you are reading with permission from [insert publisher here].
Recordings should only be posted/shared on closed platforms such as a private YouTube channel (make video Unlisted when posting) or password-protected school platform.
Video access should be disabled or deleted by June 30, 2020 (this may be extended depending on circumstances).
Many of the publishers require notification when a title is chosen. See individual guidelines per publisher.

Fair Use Guidelines

In addition to the guidelines above, a virtual read aloud video may also fall under the Fair Use category of copyright. Carrie Russell, the copyright specialist for the Office for Information Technology Policy (OITP) of the American Library Association and author of several books on copyright, has answered essential questions and provided tips in this article, Online Story Time & Coronavirus: It's Fair Use, Folks.

Please make sure to read the article thoroughly and completely.

Authors' Reading Schedules

Several authors and illustrators have created schedules in which they read aloud their own books and/or provide activities. Be advised that authors use a variety of platforms such as YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram.
