A MESSAGE FROM OUR SCHOOL PRINCIPAL:
The Leader in Me is a whole-school transformation model, developed in partnership with educators. It teaches 21st century leadership and life skills to students and creates a culture of student empowerment based on the idea that every child can be a leader.
In detailing how Pontiac demonstrated the core paradigms of The Leader in Me program, the Lighthouse Status report noted: “Teachers purposefully explore and implement high trust behaviors with each other and with students. The school sustains support for teachers' efforts to encourage students to actively synergize strengths, abilities, and expertise and enhance engagement and collaborative work. Teachers use a variety of tools to engage students in collaborative learning. The school has emphasized the importance of empowered learning through professional development."
“I am very proud of our school, our students, our faculty and our community. Every staff member and student has stepped up to lead this year,” said Pontiac Elementary Principal Katie Barber. Pontiac implemented Leader in Me three years ago.
In order to achieve this impressive goal, Pontiac had to assemble a Lighthouse Team, create a leadership environment, teach and reinforce the 7 Habits, work together collaboratively, have students in meaningful leadership roles, involve parents, create and hold leadership events, use student data through leadership notebooks and other leadership tools, and show measurable results.
Pontiac is the 3rd Richland Two school to receive this honor. Sandlapper Elementary School earned the status in 2017 and Round Top Elementary School acheived the status in 2018. Only 350 schools worldwide have achieved Lighthouse Status.
Pontiac Families,
On May 21st fourth and fifth grade students will be administered the SC PASS state assessment in Science or Social Studies. The SC READY measures students’ performance on the South Carolina Academic Standards, with test results being used for school, district, and federal accountability purposes. The test is untimed and will be administered online. The testing schedule will be:
Tuesday, May 21st - SC PASS Science Test for Students in Grade 4
Tuesday, May 21st - SC PASS Social Studies Test for Students in Grade 5
In an effort to make testing go smoothly please ensure that your child gets a good night’s sleep each night prior to the test and is at school no later than 8:10 am each morning. Testing will take place during the first portion of each day. It is our expectation that each student does his/her personal best during testing.
Students who are absent during testing will be administered make-up tests. Please avoid scheduling any appointments and early dismissal on the days of testing.
If you have any questions regarding testing please do not hesitate to contact your child’s teacher or Mrs. Savage, the school testing coordinator.
Thank you and have a good evening!
