Principal Update
10/28/22
Dear LP Families,
We are starting to wind down our first ever Socktober event and I am in awe of how generous our school community has been. When I walk into each classroom, I see boxes that are filled with new hats, gloves, and socks that are being collected for a local homeless shelter. Our students are developing a sense of empathy and ability to serve our community. Thank you for joining us in building these character traits.
A few things during these last few days of Socktober: we will continue collecting donations through Monday, October 31st so you still have time if you want to participate!
Tonight, we will be celebrating with our first PTA sponsored event- Socktober Movie Fest Night! The movie starts at 6:00pm in our cafeteria. Bring your blankets, lawn chairs, and whole family! Our PTA will be providing snacks; we hope to see you there!
Finally, Socktober culminates on Monday, October 31st with Dress Up Day. Students are invited to wear their costume to school or dress as if they were going to a Sock Hop to match our theme week. I actually had to look up what a Sock Hop was and found this definition: Sock hops were commonly held at high schools, often in the school gymnasium or cafeteria. The term came about because dancers were required to remove their hard-soled shoes to protect the varnished floor of the gymnasium. Fascinating! I added a picture below in case you wanted some ideas of how students could dress for a sock hop!
While both of these options are great fun, I want to make sure I address the intention. We know October 31st is Halloween and many of our students celebrate this holiday, however we have many students who do not. It is very important to LP and our district that we are inclusive of all students, not just some. In that spirit, we will leave the Halloween celebrations for students to enjoy at home with their families but look forward to seeing their costume. Please make sure students do not come to school with any costumes that are scary/gore, have fake weapons, fake blood, or cover their entire face. We look forward to dress up day as a way to celebrate the end of Socktober and the generous donations collected by students and staff! Feel free to reach out with any questions or clarifications.
I hope you all enjoy the weekend!
