Briarwood Update
On December 6th Briarwood hosted the STEM showcase for the elementary buildings. It was a fun night and well attended by community members.
The article from the Warren Weekly, captured the event.
Science
The students in 2nd grade are using paper to build the foundation of a structure. Over the past several weeks the students learned about the characteristics of building materials. The inquiry based approach is engaging and allows students to discover learning through trial and error.
Bronco Links
On December 7th, LINKS Night Out was held at Briarwood. A LINK is a student volunteer who supports another student in the classroom, during lunch, and/or at recess to include them in activities and model appropriate interactions or encourage positive behaviors. LINKS provide support to peers, but are not responsible for their peer's behavior and are always supervised by adults. The event was planned to allow parents to allow parents to drop students off at school for two hours, while students were engaged in activites such as playing games, an art project, and eating pizza together. It was a success thanks to the support from staff and parents.

Pinewood Update
Under the direction of music teacher, Ms. Kate Hyne, the 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students shared their vocal talents for our school and community. The students participated in both an after school concert and during school concert. The Pinewood Community was extremely proud of their hard work and in their talents. We look forward to this tradition continuing in the coming years!
PBIS Behavior Incentives
December ended in a flurry, as our Pinewood students participated in various PBIS events. 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students chose between a dance party, extra recess, a fancy lunch and electronics game day. The Kindergarten, 1st grade and 2nd grade students all participated in a dance party, with holiday cookies and some of the best moves around!
Additionally, students recently participated in a PBIS walk, to reestablish behavior expectations in 2019. We look forward to their continuing to earn Panther Pesos, as they display their positive behavior.
January Staff Meeting
The staff recently participated in a reflection activity, where we looked into the results of our parents surveys and determined areas of success and areas of need. The staff was extremely engaged in their conversations and we look forward to utilizing the parent data, and our reflections to further improve Pinewood Elementary School.
Season of Giving
The Pinewood Elementary School Community, once again, provided for those in need during the holiday season. This years Giving Tree was bare, heading into the last week of 2018, with our community helping five families in need. The continued generosity of our community is always prevalent during the holiday season, and we thank all of those who assisted in our efforts. We are a truly blessed community!
Westwood Update
Professional Development
Westwood was proud to host our elementary Math Lesson Study classroom observation. This year, our district 3rd grade teachers are collaborating with Wayne State University. We are excited to see the enthusiasm and eagerness to learn and grow together.
PBIS C.A.T.S BehaviorWe are so very proud of our Wildcats! Celebrating the holiday season and excellent student behavior for the month of December, our wildcats earned a cookie decorating incentive. Staff baked sugar cookies and our parent volunteers supervised the event. Eligible students (zero office referrals for the month) received a cookie, slathered with yummy frosting and sprinkles. It was a highlight of the month :)
Season of Giving
Our PBIS student reps organized a sock drive for our school. During the month of December, classrooms collected over 1500 socks, which will be donated to Macomb County shelters. Our PTO group promoted a can food drive and once again, Westwood coordinated a Giving Tree for our families. Over 21 families were impacted by the generosity and support of our Westwood Community.
Breakfast with Santa
Our Wildcats enjoyed a very special Breakfast with Santa hosted by our Westwood PTO group. We were pleased to serve over 300 people a special pancake and sausage breakfast. It was great to see so many families show up to enjoy breakfast together.
Did someone say COOKIE :)
