MAP Resources - ES
July 30th, 2023

Goals
Our goal at LSOA Elementary is to provide the right supports at the right time to make sure every student achieves at least one year's academic growth.Teachers receive accurate, actionable evidence from the MAP Growth assessments to inform instructional strategies regardless of how far students are above or below grade level. Because these assessments are designed to measure growth, students cannot fail or pass them. You can think of MAP tests like eye exams – all we need is information to determine what support you need to succeed!
What is MAP?
Watch this 3 minute video for an overview of what MAP is, how the exam works, and how we can use the data!
When will we take MAP?
You will take Math and Reading MAP assessments three times this year. This will allow us to measure your growth over time!
Beginning of the Year
When: Your first week of school
Please note: Cohort 6 and beyond will not complete Beginning of the Year MAP assessments.
Middle of the Year
When: January 8th & 9th
Please note: Only Cohorts 1-7 will complete Middle of the Year MAP assessments.
End of the Year
When: May 6th & 7th
You will complete your Reading and Math MAP assessments in two live Class Connect sessions with your teacher. It is very important to read all emails from your teacher! They will announcement when MAP is coming and will provide your exact time to complete your assessments.
How can I prepare for MAP assessments?
It's important to remember that MAP is not high-stakes testing. It is simply information for your teachers and you! Remember, it's helpful to think of MAP like an eye exam - you cannot fail! We will use the information to make sure you have the proper supports in place to be successful this year; just like your eye doctor makes sure to give you glasses if you need them!
The best way to prepare for MAP assessments is the ensure you know your schedule and that your technology is working! This will ensure you are able to complete your tests without any frustration.

How can my Learning Coach help me?
Please make every effort to have an adult available at home to monitor the student during MAP testing. While this may not always be possible, having an adult nearby for MAP testing ensures any potential frustrations with technology are handled quickly to minimize frustration.
We've provided a list of ways you, as the Learning Coach, can help your student throughout the MAP tests!
- Allow the student to answer ALL questions on their own.
- Your student will answer about half of the questions incorrectly. As explained in the video above, the test is designed this way! Just like an eye exam, if you help your student, their results will be inaccurate and they may miss out on needed supports.
- Allow the student to read all questions and reading passages on their own.
- Some students may have text-to-speech if this modification is a part of your child's education plan.
- Again, we want accurate results to ensure we provide the correct supports for your student's success this year! If they get frustrated or tired, alert the teacher they will be taking a 5 minute break and then keep going.
- Assist your child as they log into the test.
- There are several steps they will follow with the teacher to login to the test. Sitting with them while they are getting logged in ensures this process goes smoothly and minimizes frustration.
- Ensure your child logs into Class Connect at their scheduled time to take their test.
- The MAP testing schedule is outside the norm. Prompt your child to make sure they log in on time to make sure they test!
- Check in on your child as they test to ensure they are progressing appropriately.
- As students encounter questions they do not know the answer to, they may be tempted to rush. Remind the student to read every question and answer carefully and try their best - without providing assistance with reading or answer choices.
- On the other hand, if your child is a perfectionist, they may spend too long on questions they do not know the answer to! Help your child to be okay guessing and moving to the next question if they truly do not know the answer.
When will we get the results?
The results of your student's MAP tests are available within 5 days of the completion of the tests. Your teacher will review your student's results in the next Star Student Conference following the MAP testing window, however, you can reach out to your teacher directly if you would like the report sooner!
Lingering Questions?
For all lingering questions, please reach out to your teacher directly via email or over the phone. We are excited to see your growth this year! Let's go Stars!!
